Well I am ready to drop the motor into the car next weekend! Spent all weekend wrapping up some small stuff like engine mounts, sealed up the intake, dipstick, etc.... I am sorry in advance. I was going to do a build thread, but every single thing fought me on this build and I didn't have enough time to take detailed pics and explain as I was busy trying to not launch my tools through the shop wall! :D I will post some pics I took through the process and hope you all like the outcome! No expense was spared on this puppy. ARP hardware and main studs, 440 source rotating assembly, Clevite bearings, Edelbrock RPM heads and intake, FluidDampner, K62 grind hydraulic flat tappet engle cam and lifters, billet cloyes timing set, Harland Sharp roller rockers, and Milodon pan, windage tray, and pickup. Ended up with .0026-.0028 clearance on the mains and .002-.0025 on the rods. All in all I am happy with the result and look forward to turnin the key and breaking the cam in. I can't wait to hear this thing run!

great job on the build, you said you added a windage tray did you use the factory oil pan bolts are did you use a longer oil pan bolt?thanks

I added a Milodon windage tray with their Hemi 6 qt oil pan. I used their crushproof gaskets, which are a bit thinner than the standard thick cork gasket. I ordered stock oil pan bolts from Jaime at MegaParts, and they were able to be used. They were close, but I was able to still use them. If you had a couple thicker gaskets I could see that being a problem. Maybe add an 1/8" to 1/4" to the length or so if your going that route. If you use RTV/silicone or the thinner gaskets, then I think your safe.

Was able to continue and said screw it and rebuilt the 4 speed while it was out!

Then cleaned up the bellhousing and painted some things and dropped in the engine and it’s ready to fire when I get a warm day! Love the Glen Ray radiator from Bob! Fits like a glove and looks amazing as well. Really sets off the engine bay compared to the el cheapo aluminum one it had in it.

Which 400 block did you use? 230, 530 or 630? What oversize on the pistons? .035"?

nice! I am contemplating building my trans when i pull it.. its got to be simple right? never done a transmission but i have done a few engines.

Is that a RobbMc Starter?

Sure is! I tried the Chrysler mini starter but it would't fit without removing its heat shield. This left the bottom wire for the solenoid on the one I had so close to the header it would have melted, so I put the RobbMC back on. It sure spins it over quick!

Aluminum Bell Housing ?
can't tell from the Pics.

Yup, it is a 1970 aluminum bellhousing. I had to buy the bigger bearing retainer from Brewers for my trans to make it fit correctly.

I used a 440 block. It is an early 73 Block. 440 source rotating assembly with .030 flat top pistons.

I wouldn't say it was super difficult per say, but you'll need a couple tools to do it. Good pair of flat tipped snap ring pliers, a pipe to press the bearing on the main shaft and input shaft, and I made a tool to drive the rear tail shaft bushing in as its real thin and crushes when you try and use a socket to bang it in the last 3/8" or so. Buy this book if you want to try it yourself. It identifies all different parts from different years and procedures with pictures. It is well worth the 25 bucks! That and/or a service manual will do wonders for you when you are in a jam. Also, buy the parts from brewers and their trans jel assembly lube. It is a super tacky grease like gel and works very well in holding the roller bearings in place before assembly.
