Well I was trying to replace valve covers and found this… double gaskets & wrong bolts and hold downs….

Someone need a smidge more clearance for aftermarket rockers or high lift??
 
Ya....it does appear to be shimmed up tho....couldnt possibly need a whole gasket for that, i wouldnt think. Odd pic.
I didn't see what appears to be something under the rocker shafts. Good eye.
 
Must have been of the persuasion that if 1 is good, 2 must be even better.
 
When I pulled my 440 apart last fall, I found thin sheet metal washers under my rocker shafts. My engine was rebuilt in 1989 by a well known local engine man, and old time racer. I assume this old trick is to get a few more rev's without lifter pump-up. I reassembled it without them.

Yes that was a trick from back in the late 70's early 80's. Might even have been mentioned in the early Direct Connection manuals.

Not only mentioned but DC sold a kit. I have them in my 300’s 440. Only one VC gasket needed.
 
Did anybody else notice the excessive space at the top of one of the rockers, between the rocker and shaft? It appears excessively worn to me. This would place the rocker closer to the cover. Some replacement parts may be necessary.
