69 Hemi Roadrunner clutch linkage issues

My friend is having trouble finding a clutch fork and fulcrum solution to his clutch replacement. He burned the last clutch out (B&B) because there was no means of obtaining free play with his set up. He has an aluminum bellhousing and 130 tooth flywheel. I believe the bell housing is a replacement from Brewers for 383/440. Brewers recommended a RAM diaphragm clutch (10.5) and has shipped him another set of fork/fulcrum for it. He now has quite a collection of forks, pivots and Z-bars but nothing fits. The fork bottoms out on the rubber boot at the front of the fork opening and crams the TObearing into the clutch fingers before he can even get the bell up flush to the engine block. No linkage is hooked up to the fork. And we checked the distance from the flywheel face to the transmission mounting surface of the bell housing and found it right on spec at 5.74”.

I went over and looked at it yesterday and verified the limiting factor is the fork crammed up against the front of the opening in the bell housing. The fulcrum is holding the fork walls about 1/4” off the inside back wall of the bell housing. It appears the only solution is a lower fulcrum or a fork where the outer arm curves back after the fulcrum to get it away from the front of the opening, or both. He got yet another fork and fulcrum from Brewers yesterday but the fork looks like the same straight arm fork and the fulcrum looks even higher than the one he already has mounted. He's going to try them out but they don’t look like the answer. Everything is from Brewers, clutch kit, linkage, bell housing, even the transmission is an older unit from Brewers. We can’t figure it out. His boot seems thicker and stiffer than mine and that’s what the fork is bottoming out on. I’m not sure if a replacement would help or not. He needs the fork and TO bearing to go back an estimated 3/8” or more just to get the bell housing in place with zero free play on the clutch. It looks to me that the only way is to cut a fulcrum down in height so the fork just barely clears the back of the bell housing and cut wedge sections out of the folded over walls of the fork just outboard of the fulcrum, bend the outer fork arm back and weld it up.

Anybody run into this before? I don’t know how he got as much service out of his original clutch before it slipped. It’s obvious the clutch was always depressed when running.
 
How does installed clutch cover finger height compare to the previous setup?

Out of the box, a block saver might gain you some extra space.
 
I am suspect of the bellhousing. I removed my 4-speed from my '69 Hemi Road Runner, it's all sitting on the floor in the corner of the garage. If I can help you with maybe some measurements or something, pm me. My set up is the 11" and the 142? tooth flywheel, 8 bolt flange crankshaft. Centerforce flywheel and diaphragm clutch.
Hard to argue with Brewer though.

He didn’t measure that to my knowledge but when we removed the z-bar to pull the bell housing, we found the fork was pressing the TOB firmly into the clutch and couldn’t be moved by hand. Based on what I have seen I believe the mounted B&B and the RAM are pretty comparable in finger height - but I don’t have that dimension.

Thanks. He has had several discussions with Dan (and Lisa?) over this but my friend didn’t know what was blocking the fork from retracting until I helped him remove the bell housing again yesterday and showed him how the fork was bottomed on the rubber boot at the front of the fork opening. He had the BH up on the engine and held with one bolt on the right side. The left side was gapping open about 5/16-3/8” because the bearing was already pressing in tight on the fingers and he knew there was little point in putting more bolts in and torquing it down.

In looking at the forks on Brewer’s site there is one where the outboard arm sweeps back which would seem to be what he needs. But it’s described as for a 62-65 B-Body and 64-72 C-Body???
 
This is a long shot, but after looking at pictures of the aftermarket aluminum bellhousing and a stock cast iron one, it looks like the hole for the clutch fork is farther back on the aluminum one. It is hard to tell for sure from the pictures, however.

I just heard from my friend and the latest fork and fulcrum didn’t hep but he tried pulling the boot and that seemed to give him a lot more room
 
Looks like w/o the boot the fork goes back to the inside edge of the transmission hole. So that should resolve it except he can’t run a boot. The bell housing is sold by Brewers so he’s going to check with them about the boot. Picture he just forwarded.

Could it be the throwout bearing. Picture, one on the right is a new Centerforce for my SB. Left is out of my Hemi 11", unknown brand. They seem to end up in the same height for the fork though. First picture is turned around.

No, it’s correct. With his flywheel it will only go on one way anyway.
Could it be the throwout bearing. Picture, one on the right is a new Centerforce for my SB. Left is out of my Hemi 11", unknown brand. They seem to end up in the same height for the fork though. First picture is turned around.

His TOB came with the RAM kit but it looks like his last one and measures 2.1” overall like every other one we could find dimensions on. I think there can be some slight difference in the haunch height where the fork sits - maybe 1/16” or so but he needed a lot more than that.

He sent a video of the bell housing, fork and TOB in place now and with the boot cut out at the front, he has lots of free play now for adjustment.
 
I think by now he has every pivot that Brewers has for that bell housing - I think he’s had 3 orders for forks/pivot parts filled - maybe one was clutch only. But I’ll remind him to use the shortest one.

sounds like the fork pivot is to tall
 
He has checked and his collection of pivots from Brewers including the one he removed are all identical. But the rubber boot trimming has fixed his problem anyway. All appears good now.
 
As long as he is happy now is all that matters. There are different fork pivot heights available for different applications, sounds like yours were all the same.
