Assuming the battery post are clean and cables are tight it could be the starter relay, ign switch or associated connections/ wiring,,,,,

When it won't turn over leave key in on position and then try jumping the starter relay across the terminals with a screwdriver or wrench. If it turns over from that, the starter relay may be taking a crap. Also I am a 4 speed guy, but I am thinking maybe the neutral safety, although I think that would turn over but just not start.

Could be a bad battery cable also.

Friend of mine had that same symptom for years and had to jump the relay if he got nothing from the key. Replaced the starter switch and kept the same tumbler. Starts everytime now with the key.

Check your firewall bulkhead connectors. I bet the gremlins are there. Pull them off, clean and reattach with dielectric grease on the connectors so air will not corrode the connectors. Repair/clean any that look bad

        1. What distributor/ignition??
        Reason being:
It seems random...and then "bang" it fires
My Initial suspicion is the distributor/electronics unit as it is not triggering the "pulse" and then wham it fires...
        Need more info please

I still say it is a "Spark" issue
Weak, non existent and then it fires....
These Electronic units can fail easily in some brands...
But, we have given you some areas to check.

              99.99% of the time
Electronics are tricky as they can "work" at 9:10 AM, and then shut it off and at 9:40 AM, it doesn't work....

My 69 Bee had a bad connection at the bulkhead. I could wiggle the wires and it would start. I drilled the connector out and put a 10 gauge wire in with no connectors. Fixed.

About 35 years ago I had a ‘67 300 convertible with that issue. One day it didn’t start so I popped the hood and stuck a screwdriver in the relay. Started right up! Of course the reason it didn’t start was that it was in gear! Door hit my right leg and slammed shut and the car started driving away across my friends yard. Had to run after it, climb over the trunk into the seat and stuffed the brake. Hood slammed shut and I was about 10’ from an oak tree.

              Be careful doing that.
