I've got a 70 Roadrunner convertible & I'm trying to finish up the body work so I can paint the car. I have some rusted areas near the trunk corners & at the top of the trunk drip rail channels. I'm looking at AMD, Goodmark & Sherman patch panels

1. These corner say "not for convertible or Charger". Can I still use part of them as patches or are they shaped too different to work for me?

2. Are the trunk drip channels the same as hardtops? Will these pieces work for me?

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP & ADVICE!

First there is a major lead seam that needs to be melted out right in that corner. #1 patches will not work. The #2 patches are gonna be real close. Melt out the lead and there will be rust under there. Let us know how it looks.

Can you give me some more detail about the lead and exactly where it is? Also, after I melt out the lead, what next? Any idea how to fix this area?

I'm betting that the lead is long gone, but I've got a torch ready. The quarter panel on this side has been replaced twice already...it might still be there, so I will look. I've just put bondo in there in the past & it always cracked out (nitrous & 4spd seems to cause a lot of body flex in that area).

The lead seam runs from that corner all the way up to the top opening. On my 69 convertible, it was about 1 1/2" wide and pretty deep. I was replacing 1/4s and part of the Dutchman panel, so I just fabbed up a little patch panel to fill in the area where the lead seem was and welded everything solid in that area.

Crider, you are the man. I've always heard there was lead somewhere in there, but I never imagined it was 1-1/2" wide...wow. Did you melt it out or just dig it out?

So, why do you think the factory put that much lead in that location?

I melted mine out. Just a little propane torch does the trick. It doesn't have to get really hot. As for why there is so much of it, they just did a really bad job of fitting the panels together. Not really sure as to why.
