71-72 air grabber bubble and door alternative?

ive got a 72 satellite drag car. I want to put this repro air grabber bubble on the hood and make it functional cheaply. My plan is to just make a bracket or something to hold the air grabber door open all the time. Anyone done this or know of other grabber bubbles and doors? This one is the Mexico one from el paso

can you put it on a choke/throttle cable and open/close it manually?

I would want it to be adjustable, personally. Easiest way would be to bond or rivet L brackets to the inside of the scoop with the return under the lip of the bubble. You can mount a threaded stud underneath to set the height. You could also look for something similar to an alternator bracket.

You definitely will need to do some custom fabrication. I did basically what you're doing many years ago with a hardware store spring, BUT I had the air grabber mechanism (metal pivots & stuff including the under-hood door)...that was easy to do. I just held it open with a spring.

Are you doing this because you don't have the original style vacuum can, piston, solenoids etc? You can probably rig something up with a model aircraft servo (used for ailerons and rudders) and they don't cost much. You'll need a resistor to lower the voltage though.

Well you guys are taking it a step further than I was! Real air grabber hoods are non existent in my area, and since this is a drag car I wouldn't care if I keep the scoop open all the time, but thanks for the ideas for the door. The bubble I'm looking at says it must be glued to the hood. Will that reliably stay on the hood of a drag car? I wouldn't want that flying off at 100 mph

You don't want air getting under the bubble if it's just bonded over the stock hood. The air needs a place to go but the point is to get it into the motor and not just into the engine bay. Is the trap door directly over the carb? If it is, you could separate the door and make it part of the air cleaner assembly. Then the hood would just close over it.

That is probably the Stinger Brand bubble that says glue on. It has the bosses that can be tapped and studs installed per factory. Note that AG hoods were very heavy and the Stinger version is heavier than stock.

I just built a complete functioning AG and it Is a tall task. I used a stinger bubble and there is a lot of hours in prep. I would never do it again !

A lot of fiberglass prep? I'm just looking to bolt it to the hood and keep the air grabber door open. .basically a cool looking hood scoop. Did you have issue with the fitment of the bubble too?

No fitment issues installing it to the hood just work cutting and drilling the hood. My body guy had issues with pin holes that kept showing up. I did the work putting the studs in and it was a pita, I was also told that the bosses were solid and most of them ended up being hollow. I had to fill with resin then drill them out for the studs then I threaded the studs in but put more resin in the hole before installing the stud. This project was very time consuming and I didn't do any of the painting or body work.

Where did you get the mounting hardware? Looks like there are two types of studs used, about 5 larger ones along the back of the hump. I have the hood so the bosses to hold the bubble down will match up with the factory hood ok or are they misaligned?

The studs I used were all long. I got them off of eBay if I remember correctly. I purchase a satellite hood and drilled the holes to make it an AG hood.
