727 ball handle and T shifter handles

Are they interchangeable, and were all the 727s slap shifters?
I have a 72 RR. I have never owned an auto, only 4 speeds. Would love to convert to a pistol grip shift handle for these. I have seen some, but would at least prefer the t-handle if its an easy conversion.

Been doing some reading, and I think the knob (ball) type handle was 1970, and 71-on had the t-handle. Sounds like a swap shouldnt be too difficult.
What I really want is a pistol type grip, which a few people do. Might go that route instead.
