I saw this on Facebook and it has made me sad. Those that have been to Mildenhall will understand, I quote from the Mildenhall Register on 15 Mar.
It was devastating to find out today that the Bird in Hand motel has ceased operations with immediate effect.
This establishment has been a major part of every reunion since it began. The place where veterans and families stayed, remembering those long ago war years amongst friends.
Many a young airman drank there during World War 2, some, like my uncle, who's base posting and life, was all too short.
The survivors being lucky to return again and again. Their families too.
We understand that Greene King, the brewery chain which owns the motel, has decided not to spend the money needed to refurbish the rooms.
The pub will continue to serve drinks, although it begs the question for how long.
We hope that the history contained within the building isn't going to be lost and will work closely with the current General Manager to ensure a safe future for the memorabilia contained therein. (Geoff)
Truly a sad day!
