Hey guys,

I have an A833 transmission in a 65 Belvedere mated to a 440 Cross Ram. It pops out of gear at times, but it shifts smoothly and makes no bearing noise at all. I have noticed an awful lot of play in the shifter, meaning it can easily be moved forward and aft to the tune of probably 3" or so without being taken out of gear. Is it possible that the shifter is wore out causing it to come out of gear?

It popped out of 2nd the other day. I was just rolling along. I have not had the car very long, so I don't know if ithappens in other gears. It shifts nice and easy, but as I mentioned, the shifter is sloppy feeling to me

Have you checked the two stop bolts at the Shifter Mechanism?

Popping out of gear can mean internal problems. If it still does it after you check the shifter adjustment then might be time to pull it apart. If the main shaft pilot is severely worn that will cause popping out of gear.

I haven't checked the 2 stop bolts, but I will. I'm assuming internal problems, but I guess wishful thinking on my part that possibly the shifter could cause it. Thanks for the picture and I appreciate the help.

An update. The sloppiness in the shifter was a loose bolt. I fixed that easily and slid underneath to look the tranny over. Hell, it looks almost new! I looked at the shifter stop bolts, and they are not interfering or prematurely stopping the shift in any gear. In fact, on one side it doesn't even contact the shifter mechanism at all. I did make a couple of linkage adjustments, but honestly, they looked okay...maybe not quite centered in the holes, but good enough in my mind. So, I guess it's internal. Thanks again for the help and advice

Do you have a driveline-transmission vibration? That will make it pop out of gear. Several possibilities, but my first thought is input shaft...............................MO

Use ATF instead of gear lube or they tend to get sticky synchronization

No vibration at all. It shifts great. Like I said, it looks almost new. I'd hate to find out there's internal problems, but it looks like maybe a synchronizer or play in the shaft, I guess. ATF in a manual gearbox? Mix it with gear oil? Or just fill it completely? I've never used it before in a manual gearbox.
