Just replaced a Interstate with a AGM from Advanced Auto Parts $109 with the core. Will see how it lasts, 3yr free replacment too. No more leaking acid sold me. Takes a special charger I think.

I bought an Optima battery 12 years ago. It went out about 6 months before the free replacement warranty expired so I got a free replacement. I have had the replacement now for almost 10 years. It has never been dead. I do try and start my car about once a month during the winter however it does sit for a few months at a time and on occasion probably three months between starts. Although I haven’t needed to charge mine I do have a charger that will work for agm batteries.
Well I probably just jinxed myself bragging about my battery making it to 10 years.

How about a specific brand AGM recommendation. May need one soon for the 06 Charger.

My red top Optima is 11 years old and still cranking like a new one. Which brings me to the question, do these batteries give any kind of warning that they’re about to fail?

My first red top Optima that went bad started to act weird while trying to start and then it was dead when I filled up at a gas station. Luckily the guy behind me at the pump in a cummings dodge was asking about about my car and was more than happy to jump it. I then took the battery in and they tested it and said it was bad. The free replacement is going strong at 10 years old. Not sure how the other agm batteries are but you are right, the Optima cranks strong every time.

Time for an AGM battery story....

On June 14, 2017 my truck died somewhere in Georgia in a Hardee’s parking lot is where it stopped. A whole AAA debacle that night left me frustrated and sleeping in my truck. Lucky for me I could see an Autozone, slept in my truck, woke up, ate Breakfast at Hardee’s (duh) and walked to Autozone. I bought a new alternator and two AGM batteries ($185 each). Put it all back together and drove home. Winter hits in 17/18 and if it’s below 30 degrees and my truck isn’t plugged in I have to jump it, so I start plugging it in all the time from November to March. Spring, summer and fall no issues, this winter shows up and I’m back to having to plug it in or it’s dead. So on Monday after I was late to an appointment because I had to jump it I drove to Autozone and got them replaced, not with AGM’s though I went back to lead acids. I have left my truck unplugged everyday since and can go out and fire it up anytime I want with no issue.

Long story short, AGM is not good for cold climates (in my opinion).

With all that said, I have a Braille that has been sitting for over a year in my garage awaiting the opportunity to go in my Demon. I put the charger on it yesterday to charge it up the charger turned on fan fired up and the charge indicator light immediately went on and the charger cycled off. No charge needed after having sat for a year.

I can tell the other story.. lead acid in the winter gave me ONE chance to get my airplane started after dropping in on buddies to ice fish. Same size Odyssey AGM and I can almost taxi the airplane down the lake on the starter it spins so fast.

I have two Optima Batteries. One red top I got 11 years ago, used it for about a year in my "other" hot rod, then pulled it out and got a Yellow Top because of the big sound system I installed. The red top sat around for several years until I put it in my Roadrunner. Both batteries have been completely drained multiple times and recharged with my battery tender and still no issues. Not bad for 10 and 11 year old batteries. I do have to say, however, they are in cars that are garaged and not driven often, so I am sure that has something to do with the long lifespan.

A good friend has worked for Exide many many years. The reason I use Exide or Interstate is because Exide manufactures Interstate battery’s. All recycling is done in Mexico for them (lead-acid = EPA BS) Interstate did build in Mexico but the tortilla’s between the plates caused problems so now Exide makes them in the USA. Not the tortilla’s the battery’s !!

Interstate Batteries (IBSA) are manufactured by Johnson Controls (JCI). In the West they were manufactured in Fullerton Ca. That switched to Mexico until their Yuma Az. plant took over, although the plastic cases are still made south of the border. JCI drove Exide into bankrupt a few years ago (see link below).
For reasons unknown to me, JCI has contracted Exide to manufacture a limited supply of certain German battery group sizes (48 & 49). These are made to JCI's & IBSA's specifications, not Exides.
I'm not familiar with the east coast relationship.

I'm not sure what "came HEADS UP" means.

I URGE anyone interested to simply read the wiki article about Exide. EXCELLENT reading.

              https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exide

I especially like the parts where they plead guilty to bribery and selling used product as new, or polluting the environment, contaminating ground water, violating the Clean Air Act, etc.

But hey, that's old news. I'll try to get 2019 facts before I shoot my mouth off again. I'm sure Charles Manson was a great guy when he died. He hadn't murdered people for decades.
