So I'm trying to fix a pulley alignment issue on a 440, and it seems as if my alternator is sitting too far back.... can I get a couple close up shots of the spacers or any washers where the brackets bolt up? It's an aftermarket bracket setup and I think it might have to go

Are you sure its the ALT spacers ? Do you have the correct pulleys, and are they lined up ? Is this a first-time assembly, or just a ALT bracket replacement ? Is the ALT pulley correctly installed ?

yeah, it's the correct water pump and crank pulleys, replaced the alternator and the brackets (p/s car w/o a/c), previously the water pump pulley was shimmed to sit forward and align correctly but we can't do that now (had electric fans, and aluminum cross flow radiator w/ no shroud, we switched to a more correct radiator/shroud/fan clutch combo and if we shim it, it will be too close to the radiator)

I'm blaming the brackets, but I'm wanting to double check against someone else's setup before I go doing anything drastic

From the bracket's description: "These fit all years and models of RB wedge big blocks, as long as a 1968 or later water pump housing (or our aftermarket aluminum version) is used."

So...... what's the difference in housings pre-68 and after?

OK... with the PS pump in, the ALT in with the JUST the supplied correct spacers, and of course the WP and crank pulleys in.... WHICH one does not align ?

alternator does not align, it's like the alternator is sitting too far forward
ok, now you got me confused. first you say it's too far back, now you say its too far forward ??? I think you should post a pic of your setup & what's not aligned.

lol, I need to stop posting with little to no sleep... I'll slap a pic up here in a bit

Alrighty, the alternator has a 2 groove pulley on it, so what we did in the past was put the belt around the outer groove, and shim the water pump pulley out.. as you can see in the pics, the alternator is sitting too far BACK to use the rear groove (excuse the dirty nasty engine bay)

First pic shows overall setup:

Second Image shows how far off the alignment is:

bracket off water pump housing should be flat, not bent backwards like that.its your problem.spacer would have to be too short from the block to the alt flange as well.

i6206.jpgforgot the pick.

your spacer from the block to alt flange looks longer than mine... think that might be it? maybe when I tighten the bolt down for it that it's bending it back?

ya,i mentioned that as well.that is prob where your problem started.you can get a correct spacer kit from mancini racing.bracket should straitn out.

i have fixed a similar problem with washers temporarily to get a vehicle going.just for your info.

Have you tried moving the bracket to the inside where the spacer is?

Sorry I didn't reply until now. But as 67 says, it does appear your ALT bracket is bent back when it should be flat. take it off & FLATTEN it, if you don't want to get a kit from Mancini (whom I recommend, I've done business with them for 30 years). You should also have the correct length bolt as well. The spacers should be the correct length to fit right in.

I've got spare brackets, so that's not a problem...

it was all about the small spacer in the back

which I should have noticed from the get go, but hey, that's what a second set of eyes is for
