Another sending unit bites the dust.

- got into trouble shooting original gas tank sending unit today. Fuel gauge does not currently work. Needle sitting at “E”. First, we unplugged the main wire from the sending unit and grounded that main wire. Turned on ignition key for a quick moment and the gas gauge went to full confirming that the gauge and voltage limiter in the dash is good. Went to the tank and removed crusty / greasy 6” long ground strap, cleaned it and reinstalled. It made no difference, gauge still not working. Next, reached into the tank and elevated the bulb arm to see if gauge would move. No movement. Conclusion, purchase new sending unit.

I heard Mancini Racing is a preferred vendor for these. Any other vendor ? Not going with stainless just going to put in what was original, no upgrades.

We will probably end up in a bidding war. The last reproduction part on my ‘69 GTX is the fuel sending unit. It failed last year. I’m filling the tank every 100 miles until I can get NOS.

I went to the Arctic Ocean and back, without a fuel gauge, and no idea of miles per gallon. And our pumps are in liters. The tank is 20 imperial gallons. 25 US. So I used 10 mpg and 200 miles. Dempster highway is 250 between gas pumps, so I carried an extra 20 gallons in cans on the back.
We use more fuel on gravel roads, but we made it okay.
Maybe the gas pumps are 200 miles apart. Anyway, we now have a gas gauge, and know that we do about 14mpg.
The vent hose had also broken off, so when the tank was full, we spilled gas on the ground.
That too has been fixed.

Aside from hearing the horror stories with new replacements I also hear stories of the new installations leaking at the gasket location - The old cars leak enough so until I figure this out I like the every hundred miles plan to put a few bucks worth of gas in. Even with a new one your trust factor is not high...... could be on a 1/4 tank and tank is really empty. Not planning a long trips yet so I will be patient.

I found this one including the lock ring. They say its same thick. as original.

DMT HEAVY gauge, .072" like OE (nearly twice as thick as the Chinese lock ring that wont lock), stainless steel fuel sending unit lock ring.
Fuel sending unit to tank fuel resistant rubber seal for all Mopar models from 1957-1978.

Mopar Part# 1730095 locking retainer, 1948757 seal

Also fits 1969-70 Dodge Truck

That’s the same one I have, including the lock ring you posted, no leaks whatsoever.

I have not found any repo unit that works, including Mancini. Have yours rebuilt or pay for an NOS. And yes, a DMT gasket and thick ring is a must. Mine works somewhat, usually 1/4 tank off but I always conservatively track mileage and don't push it.

This is probably the biggest restoration complaint I've heard over the last ten+ years... from myself as well. That being the case, I can't believe no one out there can make a decent sending unit. Good grief, it ain't rocket science; it's a potentiometer and a stick! If someone would make an accurate one, it would be a serious cha-ching for them!

Had a few minutes today to recheck size of fuel lines. I am attaching 2 pics of which shows the originality of the sending unit. Very crusty and dirty. I used a set of calipers to measure outside diameter of both lines and to my surprise the main output fuel line is 5/16" OD. It measures the same at the carb as well. The adjacent vent line is 1/4" OD. If anyone out there has a true survivor or a manual can you verify my findings. I just assumed it was a 3/8" out let line all along. I am glad I did not order anything yet.
