Any Roofers out there?

I don't tip much but we do feed 'em every day. Got the BBQ rolling with burgers, dogs and fries out of the oven, Home made bread and cookies.....drinks...a couple of picnic tables...usually goes over well...lol. We had a bunch of work done a month or so ago and the guys were asking if we had any MORE work to do, or, failing that if we would adopt them..lol.
Sounds like perks to me. Same as a tip.

Oh ya, a tip to someone working in construction doesn't have to be cash. Food is a great option. Even something as simple as a plate of cookies and a pot of coffee go a long way.

I got the check in the mail the other day. Here is what I need to know. The check is for 6900.00 Talking to the roofer he says thats the first check for materials. Then there is a second check on completion of the job. My insurance guy broke it down to me like this.

10,400
2500 deperciation
1000 deductable.
6900.00 check. Is there really 6900.00 worth of materials?

I know roofing materials have gone through the roof! No pun intended. How many squares does your roof require? If you mentioned that already, I missed it....

I have no idea.. Not a roofer. But my house is a split level probably about 1200 sq feet with a small bay window on the back of the house. Looks about like a 5/12 pitch upper and lower.

Nobody has gave you an estimate and told you how many squares it needs? Get more than just a couple of estimates as some will quote more and then when you ain't looking, they will load up the extras for themselves when the job is over. Anything that was left over and not opened will be taken back by the establishment that sold you the supplies. That's another thing you need to stay on top of.....them opening everything as the job progresses then telling you the store won't take back opened bundles (which is true) when the job is done then will offer to dispose of the left overs for you. Instead they keep it for the next job.

I will call another roofer today.. Have them come out and look at it. The guy never gave me any kind of number. He said he would show me the proposal but he also wants to get the check the same day.. Is that odd?

Not odd.....it's high pressure sales and you should forget that one.

Run Forest Run.

I have another guy coming out at 11 today they are local.. I will get this sorted out. Again I appreciate the information.

If your roof isn't leaking, take your time. Does the check have an expiration date on it? If it does, it should still give you plenty of time to not have to rush into it....

As I said in an early post rather than give the roofer the money for materials buy them yourself. Ask roofer to make a materials list of what he needs. My daughter just had her roof done, house 48' x 28' with a 12' x 12' breezeway and a 22' x 22' garage. Stripped 2 layers of shingles done one day, $11k. I used same contractor On my house 10 years before made it much easier. He knew he was getting paid, he supplied everything no money down.

There are a few places in the attic but nothing major. I can shop around with that in mind. The whole drive by roofer crap is a little off putting. Seems like my neighbor got their roof done for 3500.00 2 years ago if I remember correctly. All the houses are mutations of one floor plan here. Well, there are actually 4 different style homes here now that I think about it.

Here is my house. Pretty simple roof. Thats a grand caravan in the driveway.. So maybe that will help estimate the roof size.

I've done mine twice now and both times, I paid for the supplies up front but I also bought them myself and delivery was free.

Im not in the position to buy the materials up front but wish I could. That would eliminate some of the issues. Being out of work for a spell has really taken its toll on the finances.

That being out of work hurts.
The Insurance company didn't give you a check? Geez.
One other thing I forgot if plywood underneath is rotted/ damaged $30 a sheet to remove and replace. Didn't happen to either of us.

The new guy just left and they are local. He helped to explain everthing and said he would have questioned the company too. Anyhow This guy is a straight shooter and answered all my questions. He said no we don't do money up front. He did say some companies do but they dont. Anyhow Im going with these guys and will update when the roof is started. I just trust this local guy more and the fact that he took his time to explain everything helps greatly.
