I have a couple small parts - carb stuff, under hood, etc, it was all cadmium plated form the factory. Anyone have a good source for small batch or done it at home?

Plenty of YouTube videos. Look s pretty easy if you are basically a safe person and use gloves and such. Try it, You might find customers here if you do a good job. Good Covid-19 job.

Are you sure its cad and not clear zinc ?? Either way, make sure whoever does it is equipped to "seal" it or it will show marks from handling (body oils) and will corrode over time.

The white powder on cad plated stuff is corrosion - commonly called "white rust".

Please excuse my ignorance. Is cad plating the yellow -gold color, or is it the dull silver? Or is it both? I have some steel valve covers that are the gold color that is supposed to be cad, and then there is the original finish on holley carbs, and milodon pans. Is that cad plating?

The gold is usually "yellow zinc", bright silver is usually "bright zinc" and a more dull silver is cad.

Most nuts and bolts are either yellow zinc or bright zinc but I can't say for sure whether they get sealed.

I've never seen yellow or gold cad.

Milodon pans are yellow zinc. Carbs are yellow zinc but are dull because they're cast as opposed to stamped steel.

My wife bought a rose gold plating set. She pranked me good by making some of my silver colored car keys, garage keys and money clip a very un-masculine rose gold color! I laugh every time I have to open up certain locks with my “bling” keys.

I don’t know if Cadmium plating is the same/similar process with electrolysis but, if it is... it’s super easy with the right chemicals and electrical plug/diode setup. There’s a lot of companies out there that take away all of the guess work and, provide complete starter kits.

Hopefully I won't be banned for pointing you to a Ford site:D

The pictures will probably load and display better on your PC, than on your cellphone.

New items I have seen are probably yellow zinc plated, not cadmium plated. I say this because the use of cadmium is restricted in the U.S.A.

Check out the DIY plating kits at CaswellPlating.com. They have a bunch, a solid reputation, and have 10-15% off sales a couple times a year.

They also sell a lot of other stuff. I get most of my polishing/buffing consumables there.

The dichromate dip AFTER the zinc plating is where the yellowish color comes from. It is similar to putting clear over paint. Another layer of corrosion protection. Actual Cadmium is very hazardous to handle, a lot of plating/metal solutions used before contained cyanide I believe.

When I restored my GTX, I took a huge box of nuts, bolts and clips to an Airfield Mechanical shop down country, who specialised in Cadmium plating. The treatment takes about 10 days, and after the items are plated, they have to be "Hydrogen de-embrittled", which simply means degassing, or heat-treating. I lost a few pieces to explosions. Some spring washers were not happy...but the finish was fantastic. I learned a year or so later that any parts that would end up being painted would be better served going through a Zinc Coating process.
Cadmium plating is a hot process, while Zinc plating is a cold process. It certainly does make life easier to get dirty & rusted bolts cleaned in a plating bath. Costs were fair for Zinc plating - much the same as Galvanising prices, but Cadmium was very expensive.

I recommend Zinc plating if you can get it done...even if you have to clear coat parts afterwards, or use a chemical like Keyphos to protect bare metals where required.

I have an old licence plate bracket that was treated with Kephos 20 years ago, and still looks like the day it was done.
