I am curious, I have read a couple of threads, but it was clear if anyone has changed a small block timing chain cover gasket without removing the oil pan. I really don't want to go through the process of pulling the motor to change the oil pan gasket while I am doing the timing cover gasket, and I don't see a way to do it with the motor in the car. I see there is a kit available for doing it this way.

So, has anyone done this?

It was/is done all the time. A timing cover set comes with two little sections of oil pan gaskets and a front pan seal... You have to make sure you don't drop anything down there, and the surfaces are all squeeky clean when it goes back together. No problem.
