Ash Tray Question ash

I have a 68 Satellite and I recently bought a slide style out of a 68 Charger. My car is a late 68 like May of 68. Now my question is if it took the pull out style should the slide style still bolt in? I am coming up short like the housing is a little bit too small
Are the housings interchangeable? What was the cutoff in 68? Thanks
