Balancer to crank fit problem.

Fluid damper from 440 source. Looks like a problem to me ? Yes it just slides on the new stroker crank. Hopefully they will replace it. That’s the way I received it out of the box. Anyone have this issue?

It's not a press fit, the damper is clamp loaded with the bolt. Torque the bolt to specification and your good to go. 440
 
There basically designed line to line. Based on component tolerances they can have a slight press or slip fit. You may need a puller due to concentricity or corrosion. 440
 
I'm in the press fit camp. I have never seen one slide on. Pess on, pull off.
 
The dampers should always have around 0.001 to 0.0005 interference with the crank! If you just rely on the keyway to keep it from turning,
you'll be in for a big surprise. You need a puller to remove it and an installer to put it on. The crankshaft fit should be 1.531 - 1.532

Never used the FD balancer but with stockers, they were always an interference fit. If they are sloppy, harmonics will play havoc with them, bolt or no bolt but....might contact FD and find out for sure.
 
Pontiac dampeners are a slide on fit, not press fit. What keeps it tight is the 160 ft/lb of tq on the bolt, which is 5/8". Never a problem as long as the tq is correct. I do not see a problem in this case. I believe the Chrys bolt is 3/4" thread, so should be torqued to a higher value.
 
If a damper doesn't have a press fit then it can not absorb the harmonics it was designed for.

Call 440 Source and tell them to send you a call tag for it, because there is no way it's correct.

No Damper should be a slip fit. My Fluid Damper was always a press fit. ATI dampers are shipped small and have to be honed to fit. Mopar spec is .0007"-.0009".

Pontiac is relying on the bolt to mate the dampener to the crank. Just another shortcut to make assembly on the line easier imo and is another reason I don't like GM products. And you're right on the Mopar bolt size. Btw, my 74 Dodge pickup with a /6 didn't have a bolt.
 
You should also never use a crank bolt to pull a damper in place.

Lots of SBC guys find this out when they pull the 7/16" threads out of the crank end.

Having a proper installation tool is absolutely the way to go.

Well the instructions that came with it specify a slight interference fit. I’m not a pro engine builder but have done a dozen or so over the years. Plus I worked in a machine shop most all my life. I posted the directions. I can see it shearing the key.

So, it's almost .002" tight? That's pretty snug.....imo, that's way more than a slight interference fit. I'm a machinist too.

It’s the other way around.It wouldn’t slide on otherwise, does anyone actually read?

I read it but got it backwards.....my bad. And I don't believe I would run that.
