I have a new pair of them. They measure 3.75” from inside to flange. I don’t know if it was all of them, but these have some noticeable casting flaws. What’s the going rate?

They are the "as-cast" and not polished. It would take quite a lot of sanding then polishing to get those to look like something. I kinds think that they may be the ones that MP thought would be too much work to bother polishing , i could be wrong .

Once they get stripped, the black wrinkle are even worse in terms of casting issues and flaws. I personally believe the factory chose the best in each batch for polishing, the average ones for as cast/natural, and the worst for black wrinkle paint.

Regardless, every set needs at least some deburring and cleanup no matter what.

I just finished restoring the last big block set in my personal stash for a guy in Florida last night.

Oh no Dan, if it was cracked I'd never pass them along to anyone nor devote time trying to make them pretty.

I've literally worked up dozens of these over the last 13+ years and know them like the back of my hand.

Typical defects, most especially on the big block version and OVERWHELMINGLY applicable to the "Made In California" castings, include spiderwebbing flash in between the letters (the N and C are frequently joined together), chipped fins, lots of built up metal on the 'back' of the first fin on the right side (such that it can actually cut you open if you run your finger down that valley) and ridges under the oil cap opening on the left, gouges all over the sides, and the fact the dog ears are often damaged -- even on brand new parts -- so even when people install them properly without excessive torque they are known to break off, especially the one on the front left.

If corporate wasn't so inclined to protect its precious copyright I'd pour some sets myself and use one of my post-bodywork sets for molds.

No one makes anything like they used to.

**** Imp, after 6+ hours of bodywork I'd name them CudaChick Performance lol ...

I grabbed a few screen shots off my website of what they REALLY look like up close.

Leanna, @CudaChick1968 just curious, are the air cleaners just as bad?

Edit: just as an aside, do you have a powder specifically to replicate Dow 7 ?

The air cleaner bases are decent but the lids have a bunch of casting flaws too.

There's a big "box" of excess metal that surrounds the MP logo, tall on some and uneven on others.

Though the lettering overall is cleaner and sharper, chipped fins are normal.

The most noticeable defect to me -- being a woman :wetting:-- is that the ends of the fins are not uniform in the least and look like ....... well, there's no delicate or ladylike way to say it ...... little dicks.

I always have to round them off (they lean the other way past the center) with my riffler files.

If Dow 7 is what I think, a kind of old magnesium look, I have one that might fit the bill.

If it doesn't there are 6,499+ other possibilities from my supplier.
