Brain goo

What's the best way to remove the goo that oozes out of the brain (ECU) and voltage regulator?

I'm guessing bug and tar remover might work.

Is there a way to help keep it from happening again?

Maybe coat the back of the box with something...

The potting material usually comes off with brake cleaner or acetone.
