I was wondering about this last night.
Do they draw in bugs from everywhere or are they only killing the locals?

Bugs are attracted to light. Just place them out of the area that you occupy.

Set-up bat boxes around your property/yard. Those little devils eat a lot of bugs every night!

No bats around here as far as I know.
Well, the old scallywag next door is a DINGbat but I don't think that she eats insects.

I have a bug zapper and I placed it away from my patio in hopes of drawing the pesky skeeters away and it works well I think.

We use a bug catcher, so we can see what kind of bugs were attracted by the trap. Mostly non-biting bugs and no skeeters - unfortunately! Same ultraviolet light the zappers use.

I understand that skeeters are attracted to CO2. They make make propane traps for attracting and killing skeeters.

Place them away from your grill as not all bugs are killed outright. Some are wounded and fly off to land on your food.
                    Better to know, than not.

At first, we heard ours zap once in awhile, then nothing. Looks like it killed some moths, don't believe very effective on the clever mosquitoes around here. Power surge here blew out a few electrical components we had plugged, including the bug-zapper bulb. I am going to trash it now, was not even effective at attracting insects in the first place if you ask me.

THIS! One bat will consume 6 to 8 thousand bugs per hour. We sit around the campfire at night and you see the bats flying around overhead.

Some bats eat fruit, so make sure to hide your banana.

So that's why I don't have many mosquitoes, we have bats! I saw a freaky sight one afternoon while having ice cream at the local shop, while eating I was watching a big cloud of bats swarming about then they all went into a downward spiral.... every single one of them went right down a chimney!! This was a person's home, we're talking hundreds of them?

Very common place for them to reside. Around here some folks get them in the house if'n they don't have the inside secured.

I always heard your best plan of attack is to "gift" each of your neighbors a bug zapper.:thumbsup:

This works great to ward of mosquitos.

Spearmint extract mixed with water in a spray bottle. Spray around your outside area when your there. Works great for keeping spiders out of your house and garage also!

Down side to zappers is that they kill indiscriminately....beneficial bugs and all. I've seen bats around here but there's not very many and thinking about looking into how to attract more of them to this area. I do have a chimney but it usually only attracts chimney swifts so I capped it.

My Wife's Dad eats a LOT of garlic and mosquitoes stay away from him. It has the same effect on salesman and attractive ladies.
