my car cover is about ten years old. I have noticed the last 2 years that when I remove the cover there is a lot of dust on the car. I have taken it outside and shook it and this year I took it to the laundry mat and had it go through a good wash and dry. still have the dusting problems. do these go bad over time? is it just time for a new one?

Depending on what type of cover it is and how it's used makes a big difference. An outdoor type cover on a car that's left outside won't last forever. Depending on the quality of the cover and the climate I wouldn't expect to get more than 5-10 years on a car outside. If the car is stored inside, I would use a high quality flannel type cover. I have been using a flannel cover on a garaged car for probably 25 years and it's still in pretty good condition. If your cover is letting dust through or deteriorating, it's probably time for a new cover. I've had good luck with Wolf car covers.

I have a Covercraft Technalon from the early 80's and it was a bit over 100 bucks which wasn't exactly cheap back then. Mine has been used inside but my shop has a rear door and plenty of dust blows in from the 'back 40' and I have to wash it at least every year and it really needs it more than that.
