Check the fuse links, bulkhead and ammeter connections. Take the wiring diagram and follow the power feeds into the car. Also check all the grounds.

You connected the crusty amp meter or you joined the two wires together? Which is it...

You need to follow what Pnora advised and get a meter out to trace the power through the circuit.

We got everything to start and run, except we are getting no power to the lights in the dash or steering column or glove box. My left signal works, the brake lights work along with the hazard lights. Other then that, no power.
I fixed it for you ^^.
Dash lights are often an issue with the panel dimmer. It is built into the switch on most cars after 1970. The knob rotates to brighten or dim the dash lights and dome. If you're getting nothing, the switch isn't expensive.
In the factory wire harness, power comes through the firewall bulkhead and then splits off like branches on a tree. One wire goes to the fuse panel, another goes to the headlight switch. One goes to the ignition switch.
With an aftermarket harness, it is anyone's guess as to how it is made and which wires are routed.
