coronet 001.jpgcoronet 003.jpgI bought this 1966 Coronet 440 last fall after it had been sitting in a garage since the early to mid 90's. It has a 273 2 barrel V-8. I checked the coolant when we brought it home and it looked pretty good. The gas tank was rotted out so I got it running with a 5 gallon can of gas. It ran surprisingly well after all that time. The car has 60,000 miles on the odometer. I got sidetracked with other stuff so I never got it out on the road. Recently, I put in a new fuel system and got the brakes squared away. I drained the coolant refilled it and changed all the other fluids and took it out for a short ride. When I got back and shut it down the heater hoses and upper radiator hose were pulsing like it had an air pocket and it seemed a little hot. The temperature and fuel gauge don't work but that's another story. It overflowed out of the radiator when I released the cap. I cooled it down and ran it again in the driveway with the same symptoms. Water pump tested good, radiator doesn't appear clogged(used another I know to be good also). The t-stat is out for now. However the coolant flow seems weak or slow. I shot an infrared gun across the block and the right side appears to be hotter than the left side, same appears to be the case where the intake and heads meet. I've got no clue on this and hoping some of you may have some insight. Thanks for your help. Jim M

could possibly have a snot in one or more of the water jackets...

1. Pull radiator, have it "RODDED". It HAS to be full of calcium/corrosion (Weak Flow?)
2. ALWAYS insure the T-stat is higher than every thing else...higher than the hoses.
3. Check the water pump...it's an old one most likeley.
This is a start.

PS: Nice Car!

(I love Coronets)

Install a manual gauge first then redo all testing. May be nothing wrong.

Also check your heat riser valve on the right side exhaust manifold to make sure it's 'free' in addition to these other checks.
