Good afternoon gentlemen I got a question about a Dana 60 I have my Charger. I went to change the fluid found metal grit. The red arrow is pointing to where I believe my problem is. Seems like there’s a piece of aluminum sliding around in that hole and grinding on the carrier cap. I looked in my Charger service manual and the Dana 60 service manual, but it looks like the carrier is solid in there pics. Can someone please tell me what is in there and what’s its purpose?

Nothing aluminum in there. Better pull the cap and see if you can get it out. I suspect its a part of the LS clutch pack. However the more I look at it I am not sure thats a stock factory carrier. What year car is this?

The spider gear pattern looks off, or is it the picture? Yes, doesn't look like a regular sure grip. Is it an open differential and not a sure grip?

Sorta reminds me of the Trac-Lok like the 9 1/4 came with.....

The differential in the pictured Dana 60 looks like a Dana Trac-Lok. The Trac-Lok was formally introduced into the car Dana 60 axles for the 1971 model year, and used in some late 1970 car axles. The Trac-Lok limited slip unit was phased into truck and van use starting in 1971. Earlier car Dana 60 axles and earlier truck Dana 60 axles with Sure-Grip (also called Anti-Spin in trucks) were equipped with Dana Powr-Lok limited slip units.

There should be nothing moving in the noted hole of the Trac-Lok, but it might be a lock pin or other small part (see following images of kit parts). I've only worked with one of these that I installed in my 1974 D200 in the 1990s.

The following diagram shows a breakdown of the Trac-Lok:

The following images shows a new Trac-Lok unit:

The following images shows rebuild kit parts, although they may be variations:

A Dana service manual is available for download at the following link, and others:

EDIT: Added correction about when Trac-Lok use started.

I have read that mopar 70-72 Dana 60s used the trac-lok sure grip. I'm not saying it is true, but I have read it more than once.

Thank you so much I appreciate it. The Dana came out of my first Charger, that I stripped and scraped. If I remember correctly, the guy I bought it off of said the rear end come out of a 71 Road Runner. But I guess somebody could’ve put a different carrier in it. I gotta run the numbers, if I could find them off the housing. Thanks again

That is correct for 1971 - 1972, and some late 1970. The Trac-Lok was introduced into the car Dana 60 axles for the 1971 model year.

From the 1971 service manual: The new differential in this year’s 9-3/4 rear axle assembly has a one piece case and two pinions.

That looks like the unit used on my old 94 1500 w/9.25 diff. There is a formed "retainer?" that would work its way out and gouge the tar out of the cap. Saw many of those while working at the dealer. My unit was just starting to wiggle out and cut into the cap. Saw many that the techs actually had to replace the housings plus the carrier's. Hard spring steel against cast iron. Not good.

Well, it’s definitely a Dana 60 and I think I might’ve caught it in time. I just wasn’t sure. I got a Dana manual and it didn’t show that opening. I appreciate all the help you guys are giving me.
