I've never lived anywhere that had an attached garage, and wouldn't want to.
Modern cars have electrical problems that sometimes make them ignite and burn in the middle of the night, plus remote starters get bumped accidentally and asphyxiate families when a sleeping driver rolls on the couch.

Just wondering what percentage of folks have attached vs detached garages.

My garage is 90 years old, so the only hacking would be with an axe

I have both. My wife parks her Jeep in the attached garage. I have a two bay detached shop.
I have never been concerned about her car self igniting. I do, however, prefer a detached garage for working on cars. Less chance that weird smells will get into the house to annoy the Missus.

At one time it made quite a difference in homeowners insurance, don't know if they even take that into consideration now, with so many houses having attached garages.

Have both as well.....Grew up with attached garages all wih new cars routinely and never had an issue...On my remote start it is impossible to bump start it...You have to double lock it and then hold the engine start for 5 seconds...

I've have had both, it's nice to go out to the garage,
in my underwear if I wanted too, the detached garages are nice too,
less noise in the house, but it's only me & Pops's now,
he's 1/2 deft & doesn't care either...
I'm also smart about welding, electronics, oily rags & chemicals etc.

All I want now is "a lift again & a bigger garage",
that is far more important to me now
"than attached or detached garage" IMO

I moved from a place where I had a 64,000 sg ft warehouse as my shop
I could park my co. rigs, my racecar & trailer/truck combo hooked up,
in there & still have room to unload, work, store "stuff" etc.
& a 5 car garage at home attached, AC Heat lifts great lighting etc. in both
I really miss both, because I have a little 20' x 20' 2 car track style
attached garage now, facing the full direct sun for all day...
It sucks in comparison, but at-least I have a garage
I know a bunch of people that'd give their "right one" for any garage...

My two car is attached but there is an enclosed breezeway between. Love it in the winter and yes I do go out there in my underwear!

Detached for sure how you going to replace the parts when the house burns down?

My garage is my also my basement. The house was built in the late 40s and the drive in part is 20' wide.
I took out two walls which made it 4 cars deep. Also 30' wide at the end. (with 8' ceilings).

The issues referred to about fire hazards, gasses, etc, are important issues regardless the attachment to living quarters. (BTW some of us live in the garage).

My attention to safety is enhanced by my situation but those same concerns apply to detached garages/living spaces.

Their are codes and rules about what is "acceptable" but those are just like most rules and laws.--They are our mom yelling at us to be careful.

Maybe a quiz in in order?----The car projects --or the house we live in?
My vote is to move the family into the garage if that is the safe place to live.

I've always said
"My ideal place a 5 car garage with AC/Heat, a shower, kitchenette, TV & a comfy bed & chair in the corner"
