OWN A PIECE OF GTX "EARLY ADVERTISING" HISTORY RARE GTX AIR CLEANER FOR SALE !
FLASH back to 1966. The beginning of the muscle cars wars between the Mopar divisions is starting off. The "66 models have been released but plans are already in place to start the friendly-competition between Dodge and Plymouth. ( Dodge already had created a new version of the coronet from the '65 model ) Dodge just had to make minor changes between the '66 & '67 Coronet to create the '67 Coronet R/T. Plymouth on the other hand had to create a new model with the GTX which was based on the Belvedere model and looking very similar to the Satellite. GTX was introduced by Plymouth as the Gentlemen's Hot Rod car which carried the straight body lines of the Belvedere but had a lot of power. If you review the attached magazine advertisements released in the fall of "66 for the two "67 muscle cars, you will notice a difference between the engine bays of both models. While both the '67 model engines were painted a turquoise blue, the color of the air cleaners started out different. The GTX 440 started with a turquoise blue cleaner but the Coronet R/T 440 started with a very mean looking black wrinkle finish especially against the background of the blue engine.
Working in the magazine advertising & publishing field for most of my career, I worked with a number of advertisers placing ads in magazines. Prior to the digital film processing of today, advertisers such as Chrysler Corp. would have worked with advertising agencies to produce the ads being placed in magazines. Ads were created as far in advance as possible to provide to the actual printing/paper company that would be printing the magazine. The ad agency would have requested a small sample of the air cleaners to be part of the photo shoot for the upcoming ads to be produced. On a very rare occasion, some advertisers make slight changes to their original product even after they have paid large sums of money to an ad agency. In the case of the '67 GTX air cleaner color, this seems to be the case in point. It is most likely that Plymouth witnessed the powerful look of Coronet R/T 's black wrinkle-finish painted air cleaner ( with the Red Magnum Pie Tin ) against the blue engine and changed their minds of the less intimidating turquoise blue cleaner ( that blends in with the engine block) to the black wrinkle paint as well. As a result of this, it is very RARE to find one of these early air cleaners. This air cleaner appears to boast its original paint and its shiny interior is in excellent condition. Due to its age and original condition, it does have some small scratches on it. As with an old engine from this time period, the 57-year old paint has become darker from heat and age over time. The base plated being closer to the engine has become darker than the cover. An older 440 Super Commando pie tin comes with it or I have a brand new re-pop in its original box I can sell you at a higher price. It has a 4 1/4 Carb opening and the base plate is 18 3/4 inches wide.
Please note the copies of the air cleaner in the dealer brochure and advertisements placed in magazines early on. In the past, I have blown-up these magazine pages into posters and placed them on easels for Car Shows ! $800 plus shipping. We take great pride and care when shipping a piece like this !
