Well....here it is. Memorial day again. Once again we gather in our homes, our workplaces, the battlespaces and conflict zones across the World, on the streets of our towns and cities to hold, however briefly in our hearts and minds, those of us who have fallen in battle, those who succumbed to grievous wounds much later, and all who for whatever reason, in whatever times, gave their last living breath, their very last drop of red blood in watering the tree of Liberty which will ever thirst for more. We. Will. Remember. You. Bow your heads brothers and sisters as we once again walk amongst the ghosts of heroes past, and solemnly remember those deeds and sacrifices they committed in our name, "WE THE PEOPLE". amen. Ghost.

Memorial Day is a very special day, sadly I think its lost on many who either forgot or never knew what its about.
Today its more about sales in stores, a day off and the start of summer for some.
I marched in five parades a long time ago, I was selected to drive one of the M48 tanks and later on the M60, in a few parades, the others I marched and at the end of the parade, id try and find my dad who was marching with his American Legion post.
When I was still in grade school there was mass in the mourning followed by American Legion members firing their rifles in a salute to those fallen in the line of duty at the grotto next door to the church.
The parade this weekend does not bring out that many people anymore but we will be there.
I always try and visit the graves of my relatives who served in WW2 this weekend and make two phone calls. One to my aunt whose husband passed some years ago, a West Point Grad who served 20 plus years and saw action in Korea and Viet Nam.
The other is to a husband of a close cousin whose dad was KIA in Cambodia in May of 1970.
I never wish anyone a "Happy Memorial Day". I do wish that they have a good weekend and I hope they realize the reason for that day.

Memorial day is very misunderstood. It is a day to remember fallen hero's that served our country to protect your rights and freedom we enjoy daily here. I served 25 years and always remember friends and comrades that have passed on either while serving (as a volunteer) or have passed on. Think of it this way it is the unofficial start of the summer to enjoy because of these fallen men and women of our armed forces.
