It was awful. They can't identify the corpses or even how many people were killed. It melted the highway and destroyed an overpass.

He could have been speeding. He could have lost air pressure locking up the brakes, they overheated. Bad brakes Couldn't pick lower gears, no Jake brake. Inexperience, could have been anything
Obviously missed the run off area
I was only on that road a few times, the tractor trailer guys I saw were going slow coming out of the mountains. You got a load on going down that mountain you had better be paying attention
Ironbuilt I hope will weigh in on this awful tragedy. Guys like Iron are the ones you want behind the wheel.

I see them every day. I don't know what happened in this case, but the level of training that drivers receive nowadays is substandard.26 years and 1 accident, and it changed my life. I see these newbys running down the highway watching a movie with they're feet on the dash.

sorry Roger I forgot to mention you as far as being a great wheelman

My old man has been running big rigs for 30+ years, no accidents. I work in an intermodal terminal and the worst drivers I see work for the big dogs, JB hunt and Schneider. 10 minutes to back into a parking spot, bouncing off surrounding containers and Concrete barriers it’s pathetic. I spent my summers as a child in the passenger seat of my dads peterbilt. Been through every kind of weather and terrain, that man can drive.

They said 4 dead, last I saw. The driver is in custody to be charged with several counts of vehicular homicide. Alcohol and drugs not believed to be a factor.

Last Friday we were on I-94 - the Edens Expressway - approaching Chicago near Skokie, IL at 3:15pm and came upon a flatbed semi on the shoulder after at least 5 fire trucks and several troopers had passed us.. Turns out that shortly before we came by, the truck driver was on the trailer checking his load, and his passenger was standing on the shoulder in front of the truck. A drunk driver swerved around the truck onto the shoulder and hit the passenger while he was standing there. He continued driving for a mile with the dead guy through his windshield before stopping. He's being held without bail. When we drove past the truck, the only indication something happened there was a pair of shoes on the ground in front of the truck, then a small pile of glass and a sideview mirror about 30' after that.

Sobering reminders to be damn careful on the road. You just don't know what someone else may end up doing.

Drivers just need to slow down a bit. Quit racing the clock on your ELD and know when to stop in adverse weather. No load is worth anybody's life.

Sleepy, dozing, bored, distracted. Stopped traffic on freeways common around here. Easy to get whacked. If it is a rig at speed, wont have a chance.

That steep grade coming out of the mountains is scary. I was bringing my son and his friend home from going snowboarding. We finally got to that area and the snow and traffic lightened up a little. Right then a herd of elk tried to cross the highway in front of me. I couldn't lay on the brakes because of the road conditions. At the last second, the lead elk turned around which turned the herd. That elk was slipping on the ice like the Bambi movie.

Massive accidents like this in Canada are the reason all trucks there are governed to 62 mph/100 kpm. It needs to be done in the U.S. too.

Im retired from 39 years in trucking so its not a “don't know what he's taking about” statement

My heart goes out to all of those victims and their families. God only knows what REALLY happened in that accident. If I had to guess, it was excessive speed and a CELL PHONE!!! The biggest road hazard and safety issue I face on a daily basis is CELL PHONE USE!!
Like @Roger63 said above, I see semi drivers watching TV, surfing the web, and god knows what else while guiding an 80,000LB missile down the Interstate at 70 MPH. I have a crystal clean driving record; 29 years without a ticket or a chargeable accident, yet I am judged by the actions of IDIOTS.
There are Professional drivers and there are steering wheel holders. Unfortunately today, these so-called "Truck Driving Schools" are pumping out the latter at ridiculous pace.
Stay safe out there @Roger63
I value my life, my truck and my career!!!

A few years ago on the NYS Thruway in Buffalo NY, a lady was killed when her car broke down in the left lane and she was hit by a semi. The truck driver was watching porno.

Ty for that video Scott.
it is terrifying to watch how fast that trucker goes by the stopped traffic.
id estimate 70 plus mph at least as it takes the entire rig around 2 seconds to appear and vanish.

after rereading some of the comments id suggest some of you watch Scotts vid.
guesstimate that truckers speed,if you can......

The trucking industry isn't like the Smokey and the Bandit, C.W. McCall days. The average driver of the 70's is a far cry from what they hire today. Present professionals excluded.

I-70 pileup & fire caused allegedly by a Truck-driver yep
saw it on TV/News last evening, like everyone else did

RIP to the 4 dead

I hope all the rest, the injured do well & have a speedy recovery
