Mark where it touches the starter with a couple sharpie dots when mounted, then take it off and ding it to clear if it affects the mounting of the headers. Or you can leave it it bolts on and just barely touches, but it's gotta make heat in the starter and shorten its life. Not much of a choice otherwise. I have seen some squeeze a ding in with a clamp and a flat stock on the opp side you want the ding if you can fit it in there.

Is it a mini starter? If you already have a small starter then mark it remove a and take a heavy pipe and give it a dent by hitting the pipe with a mash hammer

You may want to fashion a heat shield for the starter...

Wow....didn't know anyone was still using those. The mini's have more power too but you won't get that old sound that the original starters make but I found I don't miss that sound anymore lol. Also, Mom made two different starters....one was larger so if you have the large starter, you might can find the 'short' one instead. The difference in horse power is about .3 between the two. The smaller motor produced 1.5 hp. The shorter starter has a motor length (measure the black part only) of about 3 1/4" and the longer starter is about 3 3/4" long. The bigger starter usually spins faster than the small though. The small motor starter is more common so you might already have that one installed.

Let this be a lesson to all you youngsters out there - Hooker Headers fit with the stock starter.

Had a set of Hooker Super? Comps on a 71 340 Cuda and you could even pull the starter out without loosening the header. It was the smaller stock 1.5 hp starter though and you had to hold your mouth just right to get it out and then back in but it was doable.

even my mini starter hit my Dougs headers. quite a few smacks with hammer, heat, and impact socket did the trick.

Oh man, my first car got headers as soon as the poly teen came out and a mild 383 went in and probably more than 1/2 of the cars I've owned had headers. Even invested in a very large flat file to make sure the gasket surfaces were good. Also make sure the head has a good surface for the gasket. Doing that help puts you ahead of the curve on leaks!

One set I had on a '64 with a 383, had the old starter, that's all there was back then. Remembered having to have the header completely loose, stick the starter halfway in, then contort the header a little more, then get the starter a little bit closer until it all came together. Some will even have the motor mount loose with a jack under that side. Good to have someone there to help hold the loose header where you need it while stuffing the starter.

One thing that really makes it easier is to pull the steering column. Not having the steering shaft there really makes it easier. Only thing is pulling the steering column out is a little time consuming but it will help.
