The headlamp doors on my very original '68 have stopped working. I know they are vacuum operated - how can I diagnose the problem? I know this is not uncommon - any advice appreciated!

Vacuum test. Look for leaks. Is the canister in good shape? Did they "fail" open or closed? Check the lines.

Also check the actuators.

Thanks. They failed closed and can only be opened (and closed again) manually.

make sure the can under the battery isn't rusted. check the vacuum lines. also the little arm on the side of the headlight switch that works the vacuum control can break.

If the canister is rusted out and has a leak, there's a good possibility it's got crud in it.
