heater hose routing BB & Hemi's

In the latest copy of MCG there was a short article on common restoration errors. They say the heater hoses should cross each other between the fender bracket and water pump in order to be installed correctly, so the output of the pump goes to the input of the heater core. Is this neccessary for proper operation? On both my cars I have the hoses run nice, neat, and parallel to each other. But of course this is not right. Does it really matter since the heater is just a coil that shouldn't care which side the hot water enters.
 
You would think that the water inlet would be the side with the valve.:icon_wink:
