The Heat Riser Valve on my 440 is just loose (ie: no tension). Not sure if it is in the open or closed position. The engine does run hot so I assume it may be closed. From what I understand, this valve is not necessary in a "summer " car so I would like to "wire" it in the open position. Could someone please tell me if you are looking straight at the valve from the passenger side fender, is the open position clockwise to the right (ie: 3 o'clock) or counter clockwise to the left? I don't want to have to drop the exhaust H pipe just to look at the valve. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

you could just cut the butterfly out of there and plug the holes...

Thanks! I really don't want to have to drop the exhaust "H" pipe and take off the manifold. Do you know if the valve is open when it is turned to the right or left? Thanks again.

Thanks so much for the picture! I'm assuming you mean that it would be "open" when rotated to the left. Again, Thanks! Ron

looking from the outside of it (like it would when mounted) it appears to be open when rotated left.

Have an original 69 GTX w/58,000 miles and heat valve is free moving(spring returns are missing), what position looking at the manifold from the passenger side is the valve open? Also, is this a source where air can enter the exhaust if you upgrade to an EFI and place an O2 sensors downstream. Unsure of the tolerances on the butterfly shaft and whether or not it will allow oxygen to be pulled in?

Info is in above posts but you can start the engine and have someone rev it up while you watch the counterweight. The exhaust pressure will open the damper.
