I'm building a 69 charger and putting in a 528 hemi lots of problems. First i ordered the carbs from Summit and they said the carbs are corrects for the 426 hemi. Bought the chrome dome air cleaner on ebay for 1450.00 and the bottom part won't go over the carbs as the carbs are 5" and the lid is 4". The botton lid looks like nos. Is there 2 different size lids for these like the early hemi's. I can't send the carbs back because of the time. I also ordered pulleys from summit and they said would work. Wrong again. Any help would be appreciated.

Original AFB’s have the smaller diameter.

I didn’t think Carter/Edlebrock made a carb with the smaller diameter. For while (maybe still) there were people making smaller diameter carb tops to convert new carbs. Newcombs Hemispherical Productions was the first to sell conversion tops.

There’s lots of nuances. Gotta do your homework.

What carbs did you order. If Edelbrock carbs. They have the 5-1/8" dia air cleaner openings like a Holley 4150 carbs does. If your chrome dome has a factory base, that will have like 4-5/8" carbs openings. The factory Carter carbs have smaller openings than current newer Edelbrock & Holley carbs. I have had to modify a couple of my Hemi air cleaner bases over the years to work with newer carbs.

There's a place in the NW that makes a base for the Edelbrock carbs and Edelbrock intake for the Hemi that is like the 6-pack . Not going to help you though .

Seen people sell 5 1/8" bases on ebay but quality on some are questionable. So ask questions and look at sellers rating. Read negative rating some people give bad rating over BS.

I'm sorry for your pain. Welcome to Hemiland...where nothing's easy. I don't know if anyone has ever made a 5-1/8" base for a chrome dome...but maybe they have. The easiest way out is probably the oval a/c if you are okay with that on your car. I have one of those here for 5-1/8". But that requires a 3 speed wiper motor which would be a big hassle if you don't have one now. I'm not giving you much help. Are the pulleys not lining up because you are using a wedge balancer? Hopefully this problem would be easier to fix. Don't feel bad about buying a lot of parts that don't work. I do it all the time.
