My father was drafted into the German army at the age of 17. My father told of having to go to propaganda rallies and stood 150 feet away from a man that promised, churches, jobs, peace through strength, a car for the people and schools. He sounded at first as if it was all about the people. Both my parents along with millions in the 30's thought he was all about the people. It didn't take long, according to my mother, that this man was out of control and after taking Poland after signing a pack with them, most now knew they had been had. The war was on and my parents knew it was to late, nothing would ever be the same again. This man at this point now ruled through fear and to resist would lead to the death of those and to make sure their families would follow the same fate. As I said before, people disappeared and reality came home to roost. It's hell to fight and know it's wrong, but that's what happened. Millions of Germans were made fools of and many good people would go on to die. My mother and father spent most of their life's being ashamed of all of this. My father was born in what ended up being East Germany. After the war the communist wanted my father to work in the uranium mines. My grandfather asked if they would wait till after his birthday. They fled that night, all of them, no one could stay behind for fear of death. The wall wasn't up yet, they ran through fields as they shot at them. They made it to west Germany where my father met my mother and the rest is history. My father also worked for the Americans and British in the Berlin airlift. My father showed me a letter he received from communist occupied East Germany that stated that he was to be shot on sight for the desertion of the communist party, escaping, if he ever came back. After the wall came down in 1991 my father received a letter stating he was now entitled to the family land and house they left behind. They lost their moving business also. My father went back to his home town and met the people that were given my Grandparents and or my fathers home. He said he couldn't take it back, that they had lived there since the end of the war and said two wrongs didn't make a right, he walked away. This was all brought on by a man that was going to give, give, give. Everything on both sides of my family was either bombed to the ground or taken and all the millions of people who died because of this man. My father died 3 years ago this coming May and my mother died last week. Say what you will, they were good Germans and very proud Americans!!........ Rest in Peace.
