Hood springs

After installing the air grabber assembly, the hood doesn’t always stay up. Is there a place that sells heavier springs? I recall reading that the 73+ had heavier springs, but could be wrong. I was looking for aftermarket hood hinges as an option. This is a 71 Charger AG bulge hood. Thanks.

I don’t think there’s a special spring for air grabbers. Your original springs are probably just “tired”

Guys have had this problem before... different springs were used depending on the hood. Was your car originally a Ram Charger hood car. Flat hood springs are different from Air hood springs do to the weight difference.

Was not originally an AG car. Is there any place that sells the springs? I checked for billet aftermarket also, but not available.

What's the spring count on the ones you have? Probably better to try to find factory springs for Air hood

Had the same issue and got new hinges from AMD. They have a different number of coils and they hold up the AG hood just fine.

We have talked about this on another thread not too long ago… yes two diff springs were available depending on hood.

As far I recall, obviously the spring was not a serviceable part, but a full hinge available for A/G and not A/G hoods

If I recall the Air Graber hood springs have 19 coils.

I believe 71/72 charger flat hood springs are stronger because the charger hood is longer, Ive been trying to find a definite answer to the correct number of coils fore Satellite springs (18) vs A/G hood springs.

Finally found some springs. Rick’s Restoration had the AG springs. This is what came in. Will be awhile before I try them.

Billet springs? There is no such thing. Springs are wound using steel and not carved out of a block of metal.

In that post, I was referring to billet hinge assemblies, similar to the ones by Eddie’s motorsports. I’m replacing only the springs now.

I got mine from Hood Hinge Spring - #16789-5A - National Parts Depot

The wire is square not round, (I read that original air grabber spring wire is square so I looked for square wire) but the coil is round, when I compare them to the original from my 72 satellite hood hinge springs, they are slightly smaller but my research said that the original air grabber spring hinge wire was square. Haven’t tried them yet.

I made a jig using 3/8 by one and a half inch steel plate. I bought at Home Depot with 3 inch sides and a center T. I hope the springs to the floor jack and activated it and put the jig in to hold it ready for installation. Don’t know if it’s long enough yet this was just a test run.

The inside T support member of this jig is exactly 6 inches long, the ends are 3 inches long. This was used for the extremely powerful square wire spring they sold me to support the air grabber hood loaded with the equipment.
