How to test gauge's????

Hello all please teach a young guy something . I have a general idea but want to be sure before I brake something!
I have a cheap chevy set from the 50's I'm working on. Do I just add power and ground? How much power? ????

Read or find a manual. Most were simple back then. 12 volt or 6 volt?

55, 56, or 57 Chevy? Chrysler went to 12V in 56, I'm not sure on GM. Most gauges can be checked individually with a 1 & 1/2 volt battery.
 
It's not a 1956. BTW, '56 was 12 volt. Touch 12 to them for a fraction of a second and if they move, they work, more or less, more more than less. Won't know how accurate they are until used.

Have you tried giving it the drop test?

Vary the heights for more accurate results. :poke:

Photos of the rear would probably be more useful to assist in diagnosis of the wiring connections required....so we don't brake it for you.

I sure did Roger! I’m six feet tall so this one fell from about 4’ 8”.

An ohm meter can test the gages. You will need a baseline test ohm value which will vary upon the gage and manufacturer. If you have a zero ohms or a closed circuit, either could indicate shorted internals.
 
Handy Hint for today.....

Electrically, the Oil Pressure and Temperature gauges are identical.

I have used an Temperature gauge from an Aussie Valiant as a Oil gauge in my A100. :thumbsup:

Only thing missing is the lettering.

EDITED: Use to have only the Idiot light for Oil Pressure....not much use really....by the time that light comes on, the damage is done.

This gauge is for a 70 Belvedere that replaces the idiot light. I believe it was available on fleet vehicles but not 100% sure just yet. My research and play time is short right now.:BangHead:
 
With GM, voltage changed from 6VDC to 12VDC in MY1955. Chrysler and FoMoCo changed in MY 1956, as did Hudson and (I believe) Studebaker.

That also marked the change from Positive ground to Negative ground in many lines.

Well there all rusted and haven't worked in atleast 20 years ! The speedo doesn't even rest at 0 anymore!
So junk waste of money not worth buying the replacement gauges!
I'll keep looking!
