HVAC controls, 70 Charger with factory a/c

I need to dig into these - on the way to work this morning (cool, foggy) I realized my controls don't do much of anything at all. Air comes out the face vents...and that's about it. I was trying to move it to defrost and the slider/button/"tooth" thing feels like it's not really connected to anything. It moves REALLY freely.

I have a manual at home but curiosity and boredom at work has me asking - are these cable controls? Or vacuum?

I've only had the car out on sunny clear days till today, so I haven't had to do much of anything with the HVAC until this morning's fog (it'll be nice later so I brought it to work for fun).

make sure the vacuum line is hooked up at the back of intake

it is...but the line is a little questionably-porous. Maybe I'll start with that.
