What’s the deal ? Is it the heat ? I’m seeing a lot of posts with members going for a cruise or a short ride and bam something goes wrong and they have to limp home

Im a member of a few mopar forums and a few gm forums. I’m seeing more breakdowns on the mopar forums .

So far no big issues on my end yet. I do have little things here n there but luckily nothing huge. At least not yet

Engines, all engines, need to be run regularly. Not just started n warmed, but driven n stressed. When an engine sits, seals dry up, calcium deposits develop etc. When I worked on helicopters on the 80-90's in the Army, they would leak n have problems like crazy when we were only flying the minimums. But, when we were flying missions, hardly anything broke or leaked.
In our cars, if it sits for the winters etc... things like the thermostat can stick, fuel gets bad, hoses harden n Crack etc. Gotta drive them.

In the morning traffic report I'm seeing more breakdowns with the new junk....and many of them are fires!

Here the broken down car of choice seems to be Subarus. Seems when a car is on the shoulder, most of time it’s one of those.

I'm never out on the freeways around Houston during rush hour.....or just about anytime but I see it on the channel that mostly talks about the weather and traffic and they don't show closeups of exactly what kind of vehicle it is except for the type. This channel has very little 'regular' news on it and once I get a full weather report, it gets flipped off....uh....change the channel :)

But, but, they have all the “upgrades“. How can they breakdown?

                      Led bulbs
                      Pertronix
                      NGKplugs
                      Mini starter
                      135 amp one wire alternator
                      Hi flow thermostat
                      aluminum radiator
                      12000 cfm electric fans
                      Type F
                      Kevlar bands
                      Stage 583 shift kit
                      Green bearings
3.55 cone posi (489 case for sure)
                      KYB shocks
                      Radial TA tires
                      Edelbrock 1406
                      Gasket matched intake
                      500 cubic inches
                      TTI headers
                      Comp cam
The trick rear main seal and cap(still leaks)
                      ZDDP in the pennzoil

And they cranked the engine with the coil wire off to get oil pressure before starting the engine, so it must be a good car!

Mopar guys can still limp home to the forums. The Chevy guys are still out there pushing.

My observation based on car forum discussions is that the skill sets of many of today's Mopar owners is diminished from those of years past.

Spare ECU and Ballast Resistor in the trunk and we’re back on the road, Mopar owners are able, ready, and capable

^^^ It will never take the place of a wrench but it makes a hell of a good grease gun.

Could have something to do with the Wuhan flu, there's a bunch of guys that only drive them to shows... A year with no shows means a year of not being driven?

I think mechanical skills are weaker than they once were and that “upgrades” inherently aren’t vetted out like the original hardware and is simply less reliable. Push a 350HP engine to twice that using different geometry and hardware made and tested in quantities of thousands rather than millions breakdowns will happen.
