is there a spring on the clutch pedal

I just put a new clutch on my road runner, and noticed the pedal inside the car had a place for a spring on it. is there a clutch assist spring that goes on the pedal ?
When i bought this car it was cobbled up in the worst way and im trying to make it right. any help would be great.

There is normally a large spring above the pedal. If it ever had a diaphragm clutch it would have been removed.
