put a roller cam in it they said...… it will last forever they said...… what a bunch of crap they all have bad cams

According to my engine builder the oil is causing all the camshaft failures lately. Not enough Zinc, especially with flat tappet camshafts.

sorry....I should have been more specific, New hemis gen 3

A friend owns an auto repair/machine shop. All the one's he sees have had the rockers go bad.

Oh,those should run fine with the current oils, they are designed to do so. Was the cam, factory,or aftermarket? A lot of parts these day are made overseas, and while they may look the same, and fit the same, the metalurgy is not the same. They don't properly harden things, especially parts from China.

Ive hade 3 in the last year in my shop with bad cams/ lifters. I want to know who the genius that decided that putting the lifters under the heads was the way to go....at least if your gonna put **** cams and lifters in all the engines make it easy to replace them. the car company's build ****, twats twat and that's that

All stock 2010 ram 2500, 163,000 miles always had mobil one oil , inside of the engine is like new. Mopar just cheeped out on parts. Its an all too common issue. lots of labor to repair. pull the intake and both heads and timing cover drop the oil pan to disconnect the oil pick up tube, remove oil pump then to re assemble replace all the head bolts and head gaskets. parts will cost around 1200-1300 (cam new lifters bolts gaskets and misc parts) labor about the same. Nice

My 2014 Ram makes valve train noise upon start up,I use Mobil one oil too, mine only has 48k miles on it.

the first sign this truck showed was a misfire code....The truck I replaced the cam/lifters in in October had under 100,000 miles on it.....I don't beleave its an oil issue. It does not seem to make a difference if it has MDS or not. Good luck with yours. And on another note I have always wondered what convertible top frame you used to build your charger? great car.

Interesting...my 3.6 V6 in 2015 grand Cherokee has rocker arm failure or lifter. It’s going to be a long day fixing that. Shouldn’t really complain with 110,000 not easy miles. First major repair.

Maybe they make this stuff so it is too costly to repair, and for us backyard mechanics so time consuming, that we would rather get a new car or truck. It still puzzles me why the Jap car engines last so much longer than the new, latest design, American ****. So they have turned the Hemi word into a junk motor now. You would think after all the problems with the timing chains they had, they wouldn't cheap out on other parts. I guess the almighty dollar speaks to save every penny they can and screw the buying public.

All kind of info on cam & lifter problems on
5.7 hemis on utube

Interesting.

I was unaware of that issue in the Gen III HEMI. By the looks of the cams and lifters being shown on YouTube posts, it looks like it’s roller failure on the lifter causing the problem. Damage to the cam lobes, and roller lifter face, is exactly like you see when racing solid roller lifters are used for extended use on the highway.

in those cases, the roller bearing fails and stops rotating, then the roller face rides on the cam lobe like a flat tappet, but neither the lobe or lifter roller are designed and hardened for that. So in short order, a flat spot is warn on the roller as it flattens the cam lobe.

Yeah, I am also dubious of widespread issues with the 5.7 hemi.
I've had (4) of them, from 2004 up to current. To date, zero issues mechanically.
A couple have over 200,000 miles on them; my '04 Ram has 170k, our '12 Charger 80k.
I say again - zero mechanical issues to date.
Mobil1 oil, regular changes. That's it.

I like the updated lifters with the oiling holes that help the roller get oiled.

Hellcat lifters are a great upgrade if you want to pony up the cash.

Misfires are the tell tale signs, especially if you move **** around and that cylinder(s) still show a misfire.

Just a thought....I wonder if all the guys in the 70 s biched about the small Block chevs eating cams and said they would never be worth a dam.....

It's a pretty easy job as long as you have the right tool to release the tension on the timing chain. The hardest part of that job will be getting the upper intake off.

I don't think you'll find too many guys here bitching about 70's Chevy 's eating up cams. I don't remember Mopar having that problem back then. I had a 71 340 Duster without any engine issues.
