My brother had a ‘71 Satellite 2 door back in the 80’s. It had a back yard paint job on it with no emblems. He said a lot of people thought it was a Ford. Even though it predated it, I can see the resemblance to the ‘72 up Torinos. And Ford produced 10 times as many of them.

I have a 73 road runner, red with white stripes and am always getting " they copied starsky and hutch" even though that didnt come out till 76 or 77. Who copied who???

I don't know about the bulge..... but the valance gap to the bumper is closed, the front of the fenders and hood are flattened, the quarters and fenders are totally reworked ... the front of the roof was even slightly chopped. The list of Petty modifications list is endless at this point.

I can see how casual car people or non car people would confuse them. I think a car enthusiast realizes minor differences in years of the same car that would also never be seen if you didn’t specifically care to know. The shapes are similar in size and proportion, maybe easiest way to tell the difference would be which one has the hood open on the side of the road
