    They're just "overload" shocks

They were used for cars with lots of weight in the trunk, sagging leafs or more likely tire clearance.

I run them on one of my cars. Little extra tire clearance.

They aren't a true coil over like your thinking. The springs are weany. They are a add on back from the JCwhitney days to help boost the car up bit. We ran some on a 318 satellite to give us a few inches more tire clearance. Still on there actually.

Since the upper shock mount was not designed to support the car only attach a normal shock absorber, upper mount damage was eventually likely.
These and air-shocks were the rage in the 60-70's . Quick fix for the oversized tires on reversed offset rims so popular then.
Proper way is to replace the leaf springs. You can get them in different spring rates and ride heights.
              Not really expensive.

I use them on a couple of my cars, it gives me back the 1" without replacing the springs, that cars have lost over the years. Checking before installation, I don't think I'm adding more than 20-25 lbs of pressure to the upper shock mounts. I ran air shocks in the day for tire clearance with much higher loads on the rear shocks mounts and have never had a failure.

There is a set on my car, which was a race only car before I bought it. The ones on my car are adjustable.

Just installed a set of monroe load leveler shocks. Gave me an extra 1.5" at the bumper.
