New build from a very reputable race Engine builder. I’ve never had a roller motor and I was expecting some “sewing machine” sounds, but is this too much? I e pulled the valve covers and all the crane roller rockers are adjusted to spec.

Engine has about 200 miles on it. Did an oil change last month and the oil looked as clean coming out as the day it was put in. Valvoline VR1 20w/50w.

Comp roller cam
440 source flat top pistons
Manley connecting rods
Can’t remember the roller lifters
Crane 1.5 ratio roller rockers

3:23 Sure grip
2500-3000 tight stall converter.

Oil pressure at 70 and when hot, idles at around 40

Runs strong and pulls hard.

Did you contact the engine builder?
I do hear some clatter but it could just be “normal” for those lifters. I installed a Comp Cams roller using their “Evolution” lifters and mine is not like yours. I have some slight clatter too. The link bars in the retrofit lifters will make sone noise.
Watching a video with tiny computer speakers will not relay all the sounds you may be making. Your best option is to let the builder see and hear it. From here, we can only guess.
Good luck.

Hard to make a reasonable opinion on the audio, but something is amiss. Are you sure you eliminated any external sources of the knock ?

I sent him the video. He’s an older gentleman that works with his son. They race and build motors.

I’m hoping he can respond. Worse case I can drive 25 minutes out to his place and he and his son can maybe shed some light.

Such as? I made sure all the header bolts are tight. What else would possibly cause noise?

A video. An older gentleman.
I don’t see them being able to hear any better than we can. You need to take the car there. I’d love to be able to help but here is all that I gather….
New build, good oil pressure, clean oil, unknown lifters.

Usually at first cold start, it’s not prevalent. Ill
Make a video in the morning when I start it.

Does it have a fuel pump pushrod?
A new one?
If so it should be checked.

I have two hydraulic roller engines, they are both noisy, and I like the sound of a solid roller or flat tappet, but these don't sound the same. Having said that, I have gotten used to it.

If you have a strange noise coming from a new built engine and the builder is 20 minutes away......
I would stick it on a trailer and go see him.

Not saying “strange”. Just that I have never had anything but hydraulic flat tappet motors and was wondering if the noises I’m hearing are to be expected with a Roller valve train.

Ok , I get what mean. Only roller motor i ever had was solids so im not a good judge.
I do know with the fast ramp cams like some of comps , you do get more of a slap noise even with flat tappet hyd and stock arms and rockers.
Ive got one myself thats a little noisy and has been since day one even with a little preload on them.

Did you check the inside of the valve cover for witness marks? JustMoparJoe had a build with roller rockers that were hitting the MP cast valve covers at the ends, he cured it with a little bit of clearance grinding.

It’s hard to tell in the video, but it sounds like the noise is coming from the left front…

Is this solid or hydraulic roller? What procedure did you use for the adjustment? What are they set at? Hot or cold?

I have a tick like that in mine too, same side, haven't found it in 5 years. It hasn't broke or given up a witness, I just drive it. Having said that, yours may be different.
