Hi Everyone. I've always been a fan of the Magnum GT, and I've begun to search for one to buy. I've found a couple so far that don't look too bad, but on both of them there was one or more of the fender flares that was warped (for lack of a better description). I mean the flare was connected to the inner lip of the fender but was pulling away from the outer fender skin. The vendor of one of the cars claimed that it was an easy fix with a heat gun, but my first thought was "If it's so easy why the heck didn't you fix it before trying to sell it?" Does anyone know if flares like that can be salvaged, and if so, how?

T 100_0381.JPG the encased metal was not rust proofed and thus rusted. Rumor is to cut thru the back, removed the rusted metal and us two sided tape to hold the floppy flare onto the car. Mine are perfect except RF one just starting to pull away.

Thanks for the information Pete. Hopefully someone else will respond that has tried this, or has any other ideas. I'd just like to know for sure what I'm getting into before pulling the trigger on a purchase. Gorgeous car BTW Pete!

Definitely a rust issue. The steel core that is inside the molded flare rusts as previously stated. That causes the molded flare to distort and pull away from the fender.

When working with plastic parts, sometimes it's luck. I've repaired what looked like disasters, and got stumped by what appeared to be an easy fix.

If the steel core is encased in the plastic, how does it rust? Is the plastic porous? Sorry if I'm asking silly questions, but the car I'm looking at is a long way from here. I'm trying to decide if it's worth a flight out to buy it by looking at pictures, so I haven't inspected a flare in person yet. I've tried typing in "Magnum GT Flares" on Google images but I only get images of the flares already on the cars, nothing of a loose one. Also, does anyone know what type of plastic they're made of?

The original flares were made of a semi hard rubber!

Kind of like the same rubber that is used on the front and rear body panel filler parts?

Well, the Magnum I was looking to buy was sold. Hopefully I'll find another GT in the future, so this information may still come in handy. Thanks everyone!

Dr. Teeth, there's a Facebook ( if you're on there ) for Magnums,

    https://www.facebook.com/groups/146952895354657/

About 1300 members, and Magnum for sale posted quite often. Where might you be located? I know of a black GT (much like the one posted and mine) for sale in NE Ohio

Yep. I'm on both Facebook Magnum sites. I'm in Alberta Canada. Do you have a link for the black GT? Thanks.
