I’m just wondering: what day (generally) is the model year change at a car factory? I know they take a couple weeks for retooling and such, but what day was the last ‘68 built and the first ‘69? Would it be possible to get a ‘68 Charger with a July 1 build date, or is that during the switch to the ‘69?

The VIN would confirm the model year. I’m not sure from 68 to 69 but I don’t think July would be the new model year. On other brand the last two weeks of August were the change over.

I thought from reading online, the end of July was traditionally the end of that model year production. August began new car change-over for the machinery with new car production deliveries expected in early to mid September.

I got layed-off in JULY and August. Different weeks/different years. Mostly July, if I recall correctly. I worked at Warren Stamping, and I know they needed our panels before building cars.

Last summer i was at the local portillos here in Milwaukee with my charger. A guy walked over to me and asked about my car. We had a brief conversation and I told him how fascinated i was with that era (1964-1970) and wondered what it was like to go to dealerships and be one of the workers on the assembly lines. He went on to tell me he was a college student in '68 and '69 and worked the summers at the Hamtramck plant. He told me the model yr change over was the last two weeks of July. He had alot of cool stories! He did prep work before the paint process and also drove the finished product of the assembly lines. We actually exchanged numbers and talked for some time on the subject. His wife didn't look happy at how long i kept him there... Lol
To answer your other question... I have a 70 charger with a July 10th build date.

When the GM plant was still here in Baltimore, there was a multi-week shutdown in July every year. If you had to do repairs in the boiler plant, paint piping, etc, that was the only time for it. Most employees on the line took their vacations then.

I'd like to watch videos of the assembly line process. I have seen some on-line, but I'm sure there
        are more out there hiding!
