Modern Air Power

There ya go Budnicks!!! Tall hair got the correct answer for you, and I learned something new. I never knew they built a Naval version of the F-15.

Cool stuff!!! Thanks and keep em coming!!!!

did you check out the Vulcan link to the Howling engine sounds?

Actually, the F15N was just a proposal and the Navy went with the F14 instead.

F-15N Sea EagleThe F-15N was a carrier-capable variant proposed in the early 1970s to the U.S. Navy as an alternative to the heavier and, at the time, considered as "riskier" technology program: Grumman F-14 Tomcat. The F-15N-PHX was another proposed naval version capable of carrying the AIM-54 Phoenixmissile. These featured folding wingtips, reinforced landing gear and a stronger tailhook for shipboard operation.[SUP][71][/SUP]

Yes that is a very cool link indeed. Thanks again to everyone and lets keep it going........

I used to be all hard core into aircraft up until about age 20.

I lived waling distance to the USAF museum, and 1/2 my high school was AF brats.

WPAFB was home to MANY different aircraft, and a test wing, so you never knew waht you'd see flying around overhead.

I got to where i could identify lots of different aircraft by the sound of their engines.

If you've ever heard a B52, you know what I mean- VERY distinctive.

Fast forward a few years and I find myself working for a woman who's maiden name is Jane from the "Jane's guide to military aircraft " series of boooks.

(I might have shagged her as well, cough, cough...)

Interestingly, they are Canadian.

Tornados are so cool .. very distinctive tail profile in the air .. It' s huge !!!

Note the worker to give you an idea LOL

One of my favourites, the Starfighter. In the early 50's, Kelly Johnson asked pilots what they wanted. The result - a simple, high performance small fighter. The first to sustain mach 2. Wings so sharp edged that they required covers to protect ground crews.

The only pure British Mach 2 fighter...the English Electric / BAC Lightning. In service from 1960 to 1988.
" In 1984, during a major NATO exercise, Flt Lt Mike Hale intercepted an American U-2 at a height which they had previously considered safe from interception. Records show that Hale climbed to 88,000 ft (26,800 m) in his F3 Lightning ". Super performance from such vintage engineers.

Hey, not military, but who doesn't like the Concorde? On one of it's earliest flights, a British Airways Concorde left from London to New York. At the same time, a British Airways 747 lifted from New York to fly to London. They passed each other over the Atlantic. The Concorde landed, while the pilot had coffee and waited for an hour for refueling, then left back for London...passing the same 747 again. They landed before the 747 reached London.

Your are right about the Tornado being a big plane. I never realized how big they were until you showed the photo with the worker by the vertical fin. I've never seen one up close. That puts things into perspective. Thanks.

Years ago we had C-5A Galaxies fly over our motor pool low and slow on approach to land at Biggs Airfield. They were so huge they looked like they would fall out of the sky as they lumbered over. It was really cool looking up into the landing gear wells as they flew overhead.

We could load 2 of our M-1A1 Abrams inside these beasts.

So that leads to my next post on the C-5A Galaxy .....

LOL - I thought this was going to be a story problem math quiz at first.

I saw a Concorde coming in for a landing at the EAA Fly-in at Oshkosh in '84, I think it was. It was floating down about tree top height parallel to Hwy 41 - which I was driving on in the same direction at the time. It was maybe 1/4 mile away from me, but still huge in the sky. It was a really cool sight.

Ever more interesting story LOL!!

Here are a few photos of an A-10Warthog. When I was in the Army I had one of these fly so low over our tank that it clipped off the top of our radio antennae with its wing! Those Hog pilots are definitely hot shots for sure. The way they maneuvered the plane around at such low levels was amazing to say the least. By the time you saw them, it would have been too late if you were in an enemy tank. And that 30 MM Gatling gun sounded like a chain saw running when it was firing.
The stream of tracers coming out of that plane looked like someone squirting a big fire hose that had bright red water coming out of it.

The plane also had a very distinct sound to it just like the Phantom and the old Huey helicopter. Just like mentioned above in an earlier post, you could tell what it was just by the sound of the engine. If you ever heard one you know exactly what I'm talking about....

My House is in the flight path of these bad boys when they run from Grissom Reserve AFB to (i'm guessing) Wright Patterson in Ohio. They may also be running to and from Grissom to Ft. Wayne as I believe there is a group stationed there. I see them pretty regularly.

But you guys are right, If you hear them coming, (and you always can) You need to look about a 1/4 mile ahead of the sound to spot them. The've made some low passes over the property, i'm guessing about 500 feet on one occasion; which surprised me. Didn't realize they were allowed to run that low over housing. None-the-less, very cool!!

AC-130U Spectre "Spooky II" Gunship (sorry 71 AG but I think these are capable of getting fitted with rockets for takeoff assist on short runways .. does it make the grade?)

The AC-130U, commonly referred to as "U-Boat", is the most complex aircraft weapons system in the world today. It has more than 609,000 lines of software code in its mission computers and avionics systems. The newest addition to the command fleet, it is the latest in a long line of heavily-armed, side-firing gunships and is named "Spooky II" in honor of the first gunship model, the AC-47D. All other AC-130s are referred to as "Spectre". The prototype AC-130U (#87-0128) made its first flight on 20 December 1990. The initial flight test period lasted through 21 December 1991 and consisted of 48 test flights, a total of 165 hours.

The "Spooky II" gunship program consists of 13 new Lockheed C-130H airframes modified by Boeing with improved armament, advanced sensors, a Hughes APG-180 fire control radar system, GPS, the ALQ-172 Electronic Countermeasure System, an ALR-56M radar warning receiver, an APR-46A panoramic receiver, and an AAR-44 infrared warning receiver integrated with a series of ALE-40 chaff & flare dispensers. The modifications allow the aircraft to perform the full range of special operations and conventional gunship missions, at night and in adverse weather. These aircraft also have the capability to loiter for long periods over targets, while providing precision fire support....

which basically allows it rain death from above and make you wish you had stayed home if you are the bad guy

Cone of Death, "Cone of Fire" or "Dragon's Breath"

This is time lapse photo of an AC-119 flying in a banked circle, called the 'pylon turn' or one wing dropped to bank and circle thus delivering damage to a concentrated area for an extended period.

Imagine this over and over and over while flying in circle very slowly or 'loitering'
