I am not up on 68 models as much as 69's, but believe C4 is the code for "heavy duty suspension with sway bar".

Where I got the C4 from was the trim code. Pretty sure it was actually D4S I think it was just plugged into the decoder wrong and then came up as unknown. But in the other websites info D4S was coded as silver/black trim. The pre-69 decoder needs some work. It’s hard to get the spaces where needed when punching in the data.

Where did you find out all those codes BeepBeepRR ? Do they have all the codes for the 70 model year? Or are these the codes on the build sheet?

Don't mean to hi-jack the thread. But I have a question. What determines what code goes on the fender tag?

This is awesome. guys. There is not another community out there that comes together like you all.. I guess I need to make a trip as this seems to be a real 4spd car.

The codes I found were on the 68 and older fender tag decoder. The other site I posted above was a site that gave more options. However 69 and up have their own decoder.

Here is one decoder. And would be for 69 and up cars. Plenty of info out there on the web.. As far as what determines what codes are on the tag. They are basic assembly plant tags that tell the builder what options to install. The build sheet does this as well but more in depth.

This would be the 68 and back decoder.

Here is a little more Fender tag information and how to understand what they mean.

Here is another type on Nicks Garage site.

Thanks so much BeepBeep RR!
I just seen this. Go some reading to catch up on. Thanks!

"What determines what code goes on the fender tag?"
I know that all the codes are not on the fender tag. But why would they put certain ones on the tag and not others even though the car came with them? Any thoughts?

It's just how the factories worked. Remember, everything is moving, and you only have so much time to do your job. If the tags and build sheets had everything on it, it would slow the assembly line down. They decide that certain things are standard for a given line, like heater box, full size line gets carpet, base small cars get a rubber mat. Most of the details are on the build sheet.

what was coded, when it was coded and even where it was coded on the tag varies by plant, year and time of model year. What happened at 68 Hamtramck has no relation to 71 LA. What happened in August may or may not be the same thing in May.

generally, the fender tag was a durable traveling piece of information attached after the BIW was assembled that contains information on paint, trim and stripes. It helps people know if something additional needs to be welded to the body (console brackets), modified (a/c cars may require different panels or radiator supports) or if a hole needs to be punched in the body (radio, tach, routing for wiring like power equipment.

That’s why you, generally, don’t see options like power brakes and power steering coded. Neither of them required modifications to the body like other options do.

Each plant and year has it’s own nuances on coding.
