I was finally able to fire up my 400, after my first engine build. All went well, fired up on the first crank and all is great. I used an aftermarket oil pressure guage on the initial start up and pressure built like it should. I am looking for a quick lesson on the pressure light. Should it turn on momentarily with the ignition? I'm not getting anything? Thanks in advance for the education!

Ground the sender and make sure the light comes on. If not check the bulb and socket.
Still doesn't light look at wiring.

Thank you Billccm, I tested the light on the cluster when I replaced them with LEDs. So I know that half checks out. Does the sender unit ground out with low pressure thus grounding the circuit and tripping the light? I am trying to understand how the sending unit functions as well. How would I ground it to test it?

Take a piece of wire, clip leads, etc and short the top of the sender and wire to ground. I'm going to assume your sender is good and you have a wiring issue.

I'll try that. I also realized that I used rtv on the threads and it may not be grounded. I'm also considering going with a mechanical oil and water guages.

I finally figured out my oil light. A simple mistake. When I had my instrument cluster out I replaced all the lights with LEDs. Then I bench tested them all to make sure that they worked. I put a positive feedback to the light like the rest. Not aware that the pin for the light is actually the switch grounding the circuit. I simply had to turn the led 180 degrees in the base. But I am curious if I could put a t in at the block and run a mechanical guage with the light?
