Ok, But How About Quieter Muffler Recommendations?

I have hot rods, ranging from a nice rumble, to thundering, to ear-splitting.... but now I am wrapping up cruiser. It has mild 440, block hugger headers, and will have full length out the rear 2-1/2 twin pipes with no X or cross over.

I'm looking for a real world personal-experienced recommendation for mufflers that have a nice deep, quiet, tone, no drone, but where you can still make out a mild rumble. I'm talking about being able to drive the car around town and on the highway, have the radio on low, have a normal level conversation, and just be able to make out a little rumbling noise in the background. Nothing fancy... just galvanized steel and readily available.

The Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers are a bit quieter than several other "Performance" mufflers. They flow good and are not very expensive.
I replaced the Super Turbo mufflers that came with the TTI "X" pipe exhaust with a large case size Walker Stainless Steel "Quiet Flow" mufflers. Those are 2-1/2" fitment, but neck down to 2-1/4" internally, and they are only slightly quieter then the Super Turbos.
Not sure if adding resonators after the mufflers would help?
This is on the 505" stroker engine in the convertible, so there is that the exhaust has to contend with.

The guy said he has a range of cars with a range of sounds.
It's not unusual to want a quieter cruiser.
I had "Hush Thrush" mufflers on my Barracuda years ago. Not sure if they are still available, had the exact tone you are looking for.

Hey I’m interested too! Plus aren’t you in CA? Where I’m at in CA, a loud exhaust is an invitation to the cops to come harass you and fine you to death. On account of the fact that they can’t arrest homeless or real criminals. Only tax paying citizens are the ones cops try to keep inline nowadays.

I was honest in my response.
While I'm sure not one to go for the open exhaust L-O-U-D routine, I sure love a car with some rumble to it.
A stock cammed, medium compression engine won't be that loud with even a cheapie set of turbo mufflers. Years ago, Walker made what was commonly called the "Hemi Muffler". It was a long case and did not fit all cars. It was supposed to really quiet down a car.
Some have mentioned using regular turbo mufflers and "Powersticks" resonator type mufflers placed between the axle and rear bumper.
I'll never be the guy that can sneak up on people when driving a car. I put a Flowmaster muffler on my last two trucks within a week of owning them.

Years ago, Walker made what was commonly called the "Hemi Muffler". It was a long case and did not fit all cars. It was supposed to really quiet down a car.

I think they were called Super Hemi Turbo mufflers. I think they simply dropped the “Hemi” part, and offered the same basic internal design in a bunch of different muffler sizes and call them all Super Turbo mufflers.

I believe that the 17747 Super Turbo muffler with the 2 1/4 inlet and outlet, would be the old “Hemi” version. The 17748 is 2 1/2”.

I’ve run both of these mufflers on my car with exhaust manifolds, and they drone in the 1800-2200 rpm range. On my car with headers they do not drone.

I think you want a cross over pipe as it will mellow out and smooth out the sound of whatever muffler you select. I have Hemi mufflers on my 66 and DynoMax Turbo mufflers on my 67. I think the Hemi mufflers are quieter at cruise and have less drone. Both have a pretty noticeable idle.

I have Pypes Turbo Pro mufflers on my 70 Road Runner with a 2.5" X pipe system. I have driven my car on many long trips, including across country. The Turbo Pros are pretty decent, IMHO.

I have Dyno Max super turbos on my Challenger. They aren't much louder than many current factory V8's, if at all.

I think you want a cross over pipe as it will mellow out and smooth out the sound of whatever muffler you select.

This, no matter what muffler decided on, this will get you closer to your goal.
You might also "wrap", the exhaust (not the headers) starting near the collectors to chase that last DB.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will look into the Dyno Max Turbo and Pypes Turbo Pro. I've found that Youtube has lots of sound clips of muffler systems, so hopefully I can get a sample.

Walker Super Turbo is a nice compromise of sound especially with an x pipe or crossover. A quieter alternative is the Walker Quiet Flow or Sound FX series, these are closer to a stock sound. I have both on cars with 2.5 inch systems and crossovers, neither one drones on the highway and the car with the quiet flow is incredibly quiet. I’m kind of picky when it comes to exhaust sound and I went through a lot of different brands and models before I settled on these. Of course we all have our druthers so take this as just one man’s opinion.

Yeah, bigger and louder is cool when that's the vibe, but sometimes that ain't the vibe.

For that classic cruiser thing, the Dynomax super turbo *with the larger 20 inch case* is my first choice.

Second slightly cheaper (not alot) choice, less flow technology in them so probably lower performing but still sounding like a nice cruiser, generic Thrush Turbos. I had a pair on a totally stock 318 with 2&1/4" duals, and got more compliments on how that car sounded, and it had just enough sound.

The thrush is also available with a larger 20" case, I have never personally tried it and have only used the 14" generic case.
They are probably not far off sound wise from the dynomax.

This is pretty representative of the thrush turbo sound. The guy in the video really needs flowmaster super 40s.

Hell I bought the cheap turbo Mufflers from Summit 2 Chambers and I'm very happy with the sound I listen to my radio. I can talk to myself and hear myself I think they're perfect.

Bingo. By clips on Youtube, the Walker Quiet Flow 21548 looks to be just what I am looking at for this specific car. Very mellow, but not stock quiet, and having a hint of rumble.

Looking at video clips for "sound" on a phone or a computer with tiny speakers is like buying a wife through a mail order bride service.
I wish you luck but you'd be MUCH better off asking people at car shows and hearing their cars in person.
