Good Afternoon, I recently purchased a 1970 Plymouth Superbird. This particular car came off the assembly line with a 440 6

pack engine. I would like to find an engine that would be the closest thing to its original.

You should look for a warranty block if you can't find the original engine. Most of the components inside the 440 would be typical 6 pack stuff and can be had. A warranty block would pass the smell test.

Here is a 1-22-70 date coded engine. But it has a VIN on the pan rail.

SPD for all Superbirds is B30 November 30th 1969.... It may have been built late but probably not two months late...
End of the day there is the original engine or there is another engine, I wouldn't get to hung up on it...

And after a quick search it turns out this was the first Superbird so it definitely wasn't a late build...

I agree people blew stuff up all the time. Back in the day you just grab an engine and keep on trucking. Finding a warranty block would be hard to do with all the people restoring cars. You can make any 440 a 6 pack intake, crank, rods and a cam. A block is a block.. Just without the dates you are looking for.

Nice ! I have an original 33k mile bird in my shop now. Originally a 440/4 car but now has a 6 pack

Were there no stories as to where the original motor went? It's often a memorable event.
It's a car worth a little detective work.
If it's an investment, might as well run a WTB ad for the warranty motor and start hunting. They aren't going to get cheaper. It's a car that no one could regret throwing nice parts at. If it's a thrasher, my preference, then anything will do as they all loosen a rod eventually.

Yeah, I agree with Sam, there have been a few Super Bird engines re-united with the car, can't hurt to put feelers out.... I wouldn't throw allot of money at a "close" engine....

@Pumpdoc that’s a great find. Column or floor shift?

What’s the back story on the car, how did you come across it and where was it?

Nice car, can’t wait to see more.

I bought this vehicle from the second owner. He bought it in 1974. He blew the motor in 1977 and said it was beyond repair. This car has a console with bucket seats. The original motor is a Speed Queen dryer

Lol.. Speed Queen Dryer.. Above I have decoded the Lynch road fender tag for you. You may already know the information but I was bored.

Because it has a console - Does that mean it was a 4 speed or Console Auto? Or don’t we know?

Transmission: D34 = TorqueFlite Automatic Transmission
Its in the fender tag.
Forgive me for being stupid - It runs in the family. Just because it’s a TorqueFlite doesn’t mean it’s on tHe console - or does it? I was really inquiring as to whether or not it was on the column?
